When ploughing on with some routine spreadsheet work, I find it nice to pop a CD (alright grandad! ), with a classic soundtrack! Have been enjoying loads of popular classics, but standouts are: 1. Star Trek 3 (expanded score 2 disc set) - just love this! Recent purchase and defo my fave of the ST films! 2. Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome - I know the film divides opinion, but I am a fan and this disk is packed with the instrumental tracks as well as the big T’s two songs. Lovely stuff! 3. All the Bonds! So many versions of this out there, but basically all the main songs to the JB films. Nice to have on in the background! 4. Local Hero - film is fantastic and so unlike anything else. The score is a big part of that being so successful. So I prefer a largely instrumental score, just to avoid distractions when working, but with a few exceptions like above and also things like Pulp Fiction or other belters! Master and Commander on the far side of the world. Conan The Barbarian is definitely on my list. It's an amazing orchestral soundtrack. 1. Top Gun. Cheap Trick, Kenny Logins, Berlin. There's some solid 80's pop music on their. Mighty Wings by Cheap Trick is awesome. 2. Heavy Metal. Black Sabbath, Devo, Cheap Trick, Stevie Nicks, Grand Funk Railroad and several others I can't think of at the moment. 3. Conan The Barbarian. This is my favorite movie from Arnold, but I'd be pressed to not like Predator and Terminator 2 just as much. 4. Vision Quest. Journey, John Waite, Red Rider and even Madonna. It's a good listen when I'm in the mood for some 80's pop rock. 5. Saturday Night Fever. I'm not really a disco fan, but this movie was imbedded in my early teen years. Halloween 3 (Movie is a mess, but if you're into John Carpenter music it's low-key his best and you can hear hints of so many of his other great themes being worked out. It's only missing the classic Halloween theme. To that-- 2. Halloween 2018 (Carpenter revisits his classic theme and score with a more modern sensibility. I work to this constantly) 3. Fight Club (Dust Bros. doing the Millennial break beat thing, love it for the gym) 4. Wrath of Khan (Even though Horner plagiarizes himself regularly and the best bits of this score are recycled in Aliens and Cocoon, it's still burned into my brain). 5. Tron Legacy (One of the most epic scores ever. Daft Punk, who I normally appreciate and enjoy more than love, made an electro masterpiece). *-- John Williams honorable mention. (TBH, it's kind of a no brainer that Williams in his prime did some of the most cinematic themes out there. I can't name one. I don't really ever put him on to listen to, but there's literally no other composer of whom I can instantly think of at least 5-6 iconic themes they are responsible for. Star Wars, Jaws, Close encounter, Raiders, Superman-- I mean come on. **-- Honorable mention two, Danny Elfman. I don't love all his scores by any means, but the Batman theme was so iconic, and for a time he was so unique in his compositions, he deserves some credit. My Top 5 SOUNDTRACKS: 1. Purple Rain (no explanation needed) 2. Top Gun (don't listen to it as much these days, but back then it was on constant repeat) 3. Natural Born Killers (Trent Reznor made a mix tape!) 4. Will be quoting the dialogue away! ST2 is the best film combo without doubt (all the pieces work so well), but I just feel ST3’s score works even better with nods to 2. Lovely stuff! I always piss off Halloween fans when I tell them it’s better than any in the series except for the 1978 original and its 1981 sequel. Carpenter is arguably at his best with this score because that’s all he was focusing on. Other people were doing the dirty work of creating the film. He could just lay back in his studio and make the music. I legit always listen to this, especially in the Fall. You can hear similarities to this and the Christine music too. Plus I’ve read articles that mention this heavily influenced Brad Fiedel when making The Terminator score, though he’d never admit it. Other soundtracks: Conan the Barbarian — my favorite part being the Battle of the Mounds when he says his prayer as Thulsa Doom’s army approaches all the way until the end of the battle when Doom is the only one left and retreats. When you think about it, Carpenter is the man. He created some major classics as a writer, director AND composer. Tank Posted April 3 Share Posted April 3 Dude-- Carpenter is the GOAT The guy wrote and directed a movie every 1-2 years for 25 years straight. Half of those movies became cult hits. Even the bad ones are fun in their own way. Of those, two of them are considered to be among the most influential and classic horror films ever made. One of them, Halloween, literally started the slasher sub-genre. Then, after getting sick of studio interference, he says fuck it, retires early, and proudly plays video games for the next 20 years. Then what happens? Well all those movies he made he also did the music for, and retro synth music loves basically built the entire subgenre of dark wave/dark electro inspired by his music. So in his 70s, Carpenter comes out of retirement to tour as a rock star and score other people's movies.
