The old (and possibly bad) movies thread!

So I've decided to check out some older movies that I've never seen but have heard of or at least seen a poster for. First up, Nightmares (1983)!

Sooo...I like horror anthologies but this one was really bad. First one is just a woman goes out for cigarettes while a serial killer is on the loose and of course comes across him. But she didn't know as he was hiding in her back seat while she was driving! At least the gas station attendant was nice enough to shoot him for her. Also, she now no longer smokes LOL.

Next story has Emilio Estevez as a kid obsessed with getting to the mythical level 13 of an arcade game, Bishop of Battle. He's so obsessed he breaks into the mall in the middle of the night to play it. Unfortunately for him, getting to level 13 means the game characters leave it and try to kill him for real. He blasts a bunch of them before getting away only to be caught in the garage by the Bishop himself! His friend, looking for him the next day, finds he is now stuck in the game to play it forever! Or until someone unplugs the game.

Next is Lance Henrikson as a priest who has lost his faith! He leaves his parish with just his car, $100 and a can of holy tap water. This ends up being a good choice as the devil, driving a black pick up, runs him off the road and tries to kill him! Luckily, throwing a canister of holy water is enough to vaporize the truck. He ends up getting his faith back and heads back to the parish.

Last we have the other woman from the first Alien movie as a wife with a jerk husband and a daughter in danger of being eaten by a giant rat living under their house. Major LOL at the "giant rat" effects, BTW. Anyway, the rat is terrorizing them since the dad set a trap that killed it's baby but fortunately all is cool after the dad gives the dead baby rat back to momma rat as it just up and leaves with it, presumably to now terrorize another house in the neighborhood. Hope they get the word out!

Next up...Miracle Mile! I'll also take recommendations. No movie is too bad or cheesy for me!

I remember this one-- doesn't hold up as well as other 80s horror films. If you want a better, but still low-key, obscure, and lesser known anthology from the same time, try Stephen King/s Cat's Eye, which was totally overshadowed by Creepshow.

Added to the list!

So Miracle Mile...it wasn't bad! It's from 1988 but it feels like something that came out around 1982 to me. About a guy who randomly finds out from a phone call that nukes are about to start dropping and as more people find out, the city starts descending into chaos! So he spends the movie trying to save himself and a woman he just met. Overall I liked it but it's not a movie with a happy ending as they both end up in the La Brea tar pits after the helicopter they were in crashes.

Dragonslayer! This movie was old but is amazeballs! I really enjoyed that it seems like a typical fantasy movie but subverts a lot of what you might expect from one. Like the princess offering herself up after she discovers her name wasn't included in the lottery and that the hero doesn't save her in time. The boy who is revealed to be a girl in disguise to avoid the lottery. Also, it was nice that instead of other villagers being pissed about finding that out that they were all like "Damn, that was smart of her dad". Plus, the wizard! The way he says at the beginning that he isn't worried about traveling so far but it's revealed he let himself be Obi-Waned so he could be brought back to help later. That was great! And then the king takes all the credit for the kill LOL.

Effects weren't great for the dragon flying scenes but they were good for the fight in the cave and when it would rise up in front of someone. Highly recommended if you have never seen it!

Did you ever watch Krull? Those of us of a certain age will definitely have caught it I’m sure.

Be interested in your thoughts as I recently caught it again while channel hopping (even though I have it on Blu-ray).  It’s a funny one - clearly targets the OT Star Wars audience of the time (I was one of them in 1983! Would have been between 6 & 7 years old at the time!), but there are just some odd story elements in there that don’t suit that target (gruesome-ish deaths, a nastily described act of revenge from the widow in the web for example).

A great cast (Liam Neeson & Robbie Coltrane in early roles and the lead Ken Marshall went on to have a recurring role in DS9, plus a number of other actors more well known to a UK audience maybe), giving it their all and soundtrack is very enjoyable (lots of Wrath of Khan moments as Horner had just done that films score the previous year). But just a few bits that stopped it breaking away from being just a cult film.

I recently bought Dragonslayer on 4k and it is indeed awesome!  It still holds up for sure.

Another good one! I love to do a double feature of Krull and Excalibur when I rewatch them!

That one is on my list! I have a bunch of 80s movies queued up, amazing how many I have heard of but never seen. I just got crap from some older co-workers that I haven't even seen the old Friday the 13 movies. I think I only saw the Freddy vs Jason movie and the outer space one. Was deciding on a few at the moment, thinking of the OG F13, Rocky and Dead Heat. Might do Krull instead, now I have to add Excalibur because that looks good, too! I'll take all recommendations, no matter how bad!

Krull! Special effects are super dated but the movie itself is awesome! The main guy was really likable, even for a young prince turned king, they made him a pretty caring guy. It was nice to have a character like that, willing to throw himself into danger for people he barely knew, like when he tried saving the drowning guy in the swamp.

And can I mention how bad some of the deaths are? For a fun, light-hearted adventure movie, there were some gruesome deaths. From getting finger-nailed in the neck, drowning in quicksand, getting crushed between walls, eaten by a giant spider, getting slowly impaled, some characters got it really bad.

Funny thing about the deaths is the characters always move on fast, it's like well they're dead, we have to keep moving LOL. The main guy didn't even bury his dad! Him and the Obi-Wan guy just up and leave the castle with a ton of bodies lying around. Even Qui-Gon didn't get a good death scene, just shot and is like tell my 7th wife I loved her.

Best characters were the cyclops and the bandit leader, they were both fun. Oh, and it had Hagrid! It took me a while to realize that was the same actor.

It was weird to me that all the characters acknowledge other worlds even though they appear to be a fairly primitive society, like medieval. They took the whole being invaded by aliens thing in stride. And the king and princess's son is going to rule an entire galaxy? I'd like to know how that works!

Glave is an awesome weapon! Too bad it got used once and then is just lost while stuck to the head bad guy. But who needs it when you have flame hands?

Last thing, the soundtrack! I had to check the composer because I swear this had very similar music to Star Trek II and sure enough, James Horner did both! Seriously, listen to the opening themes to both and tell me they don't sound alike!

Horner did the score for Battle Beyond the Stars too, lots of familiar elements there

I need to give Krull another go, but I don't think it has a particular standout thing that makes me love so many of these films and forgive their flaws, like Tim Curry / Darkness in Legend

My favorite thing in Krull is the crystal / albino spider part

Some less well known 80s movies I watched often:

Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone (1983)

Starchaser: The Legend of Orin (1985)

Eliminators (1986)

These are all getting added! Spacehunter looks especially good.

Regarding Horner, I do like the track from Aliens when they first encounter them and Ripley is heading the rescue. That track is great! So he's repetitive but he does put out good ones.

Speaking of Aliens, anyone watch the 1983 Alien spoof, The Creature Wasn’t Nice (which was later renamed Spaceship and then Naked Space)? Starred Leslie Nielsen and Cindy Williams.

I also loved:

Moving Violations

D.C. Cab

1980’s comedies were something else. Even the bad ones are rewatchable.

Just looked it up, the whole movie is on Youtube for viewing convenience! 80s comedies are some of the the best. That reminds me I need to add the Porky's movies to my list.

Mr Mom! Just randomly threw it on even though I have some other movies higher on my list. It's an okay 80s comedy but wow is it dated. Was the average guy really that inept at housework in the 80s? Even I was able to figure out laundry the first time I did it, it wasn't that hard. And cooking, c'mon! Throw some pasta in hot water for ten minutes and throw sauce on it after, done! I guess ramen wasn't a thing in the 80s, either? :P

And this movie is an HR nightmare! From the offices filled with smoke and the comments towards women, these guys wouldn't last a day in an office now. Well, maybe some offices...and then there is the boss trying to talk the wife into leaving Keaton and marrying him near the end. Like WTF, dude. This movie would definitely not be made today or at least not without some major changes.

Still, worth seeing for early Keaton as he is pretty funny throughout it.
