Some guy connected with me on LinkedIn today, and when he saw me get online to check a notification, he starts a chat. He starts with “I know you, right?” Nope. He then tells me that he invested in bitcoin (HA HAHA HAHAHAHA what is this, 2015?), and it hasn’t paid out yet, and his wife is sick, and can I just loan him some money? He’ll pay me back on the third. He’s only asking me because I’m a woman” (what is that supposed to mean, anyway?). This is after this guy looked at my profile, and apparently didn’t notice I have been unemployed for six months, so why he thought I was a good mark is beyond me. But really. You'll have fun!' and now over two decades later I am not free and I am not fun no sir I don't know, Iceheart, sounds like you've got a chance to help out this future cryptocurrency millionaire and his super for real wife what kind of monster would say no to an opportunity like I constantly get calls on my cell phone from a Chinese woman saying things like "zhè gè shí hòu nǐ zài lù shàng yù dào de suǒ yǒu rén dōu shì xiàng nǐ suǒ mìng de gū hún yě guǐ" - lady, what kind of game are you playing with I can't think of any obvious scams anyone has ever tried to pull on me. It's possible I'm just a very gullible person and automatically assume other people are telling me the truth and act accordingly??? When a computer tells me there are Hot Girls In My Area Aching To Meet Me, well, I gather that's what the situation is. I believe computer! Why would computer lie? When a guy comes up to me in the library and hands me a hastily photocopied note on which is written the words 'I Am Deaf And In Need Of Financial Support. Anything You Give Could Help Me' I believe that man is deaf! I believe he needs my help! Or maybe it's just that my memory is shot. Knowing people are probably behind on their bill, the recording sounds pretty legit and it gives you an 800 number to call to address your overdue bill. It's done well enough that I thought the call was real. But because I hate talking to people, I went online first and checked my account. Totally paid up in full, next bill hadn't even been issued. Googled the number, and and saw that it was a scam. Apparently you call anf give up your account number, they can then steal whatever credit card you may use to pay your account. I’m guessing they’re probably really convincing people who are in bad shape to sell their houses cheap. Our house is probably worth double what we paid back in 2013, so selling it at a discount would be stupid. The Columbus housing market is insane. Email scams, text scams and cold caller boiler room scams aplenty. Some are convincing others not so much. The last one I got was a call from "Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC)" saying that there is a tax fraud case being built against me and to pay my fine now". Pffft what am I a sucker? Hung up on that call. HMRC never phone and would certainly not cold call you for something as serious as tax fraud. Then I often get insurance scams where some **** will ring and say "Hi we've heard you've been in an accident and need compensation..blah blah blah" And then there are always the periodic emails from the bank of Nigeria that slip through the spam filter. Zerimar Nyliram Posted September 27, 2020 Share Posted September 27, 2020 The following is part of the reason why I am no longer a strong believer in online dating, other than the fact that it feels like just bidding on a pretty face and hoping the person on the other side will choose you. "Sold to the bald man in the back for a mutual interest in classical literature!" There was a common scam on POF that involved video chat. You'd be chatting with a "girl" for a few minutes, after which she'd say she wanted to video chat with you, and she shares a link to some website (which often advertised porn) where you'd have to put in a credit card number. Fairly transparent, and once you called the "girl" out on it, she'd shut up, delete her account, and start over again from the ground up to sucker others. A more elaborate phishing scam I encountered once involved me talking to a "girl" for several days. She would go out of her way to tell very personal and intimate things, about past abuse, saying how she didn't want to talk about it (convincingly playing the part of a survivor), and just really taking her time working on her "lead" instead of moving in for the kill straight away. In fact, if memory serves me right, she even waited patiently until I escalated the interaction, suggesting we exchange numbers and meet up. It was at this point that she revealed that, due to past experiences, she wanted to go on a "chaperoned date," where a bodyguard accompanied us. I nearly fell for it. I said I'd consent to being searched, signing a waiver, whatever was necessary. That was when things got weird. She said something to the effect of, "Okay, great! I'll let POF know and they'll contact you." I thought, wait a minute: POF offers such services? That's surprising, to say the least. My previous understanding was that it was going to be a private bodyguard that she hired. My suspicion had been raised, but I still clung to hope simply because she had taken so much time and seemed so genuine. Then I get an email which was quite obviously a fake. It came from a very strange address, yet the sender claimed to be the guy who "created" POF (with absolutely no official imagery, mind you), and sure enough, he linked me to a sight where I had to put in a credit card. I stopped talking to the "girl." She reached out to asked me if I was still there, at which point I blocked her number. Still, I couldn't help but admire the creativity and tenacity. Because of the car which I have to get fixed because I was clipped on the highway on the way to Arizona and because my sister is back in the hospital and because my parents may have to call my personal phone I have to answer calls because it's important. I am getting every robo call about car warranties and dumb stuff about how I'm going to jail if I don't pay my IRS debt. When I answer I try to sound super different like a deep voice or something. Before all the drama happened I used to answer unknown calls as Barry's House of Bagels This is Barry. What can I get you? and that usually resulted in a hang up.
