I need a new keyboard and I like the backlit models but I'm not a gamer. I don't want to pay for one of these with a mess of features I don't need-I just want a basic keyboard but with the fun glowy backlighting. What should I look for? Just the cheapest one I can find?

OH MAN. I love this keyboard I got at Best Buy for $10.00. It is not backlit but it's a dream to type on. Let me search for you to see what I like! HA!

WIred or wireless?

My new keyboard was wired. Hence the $10 cost.

I really like this but I think the rainbow would distract.

Here is a wired keyboard that is back lit and ergo, with a mouse.  It's a gamer keyboard, but not too many crazy options:

Here are a few Logitech keyboards.  Logitech is a good brand, so if you don't like these, they may have other models you might like.

Wired mouse and keyboard, not back lit:

https://www.amazon.c...way&sr=8-2&th=1

Wireless without Mouse, back lit:

https://www.amazon.c...=gateway&sr=8-3

Wireless with Mouse, back lit:

https://www.amazon.c...way&sr=8-3&th=1

Hope that helps...

OK, why do some of these look as if they're written in Klingon? This is my issue with gaming keyboards-the prettier ones have keys I can't even figure out what they are. Does that matter? Will the keys I need still be in their familiar places or do gamer keyboards replace some with gamer-specific keys?

Short answer, alien technology from Area 51.

Long answer,  a lot of gamer keyboards have specific keys for gaming (some even customized for certain games), sort of like short cut keys for video or audio playback you end up seeing on premium keyboards.   The ones I posted really don't have much more than what Spam posted.    The Logitech keyboards' layouts are almost the same as what Spam posted (arrow keys, 10-key number entry).  The Red Dragon one just has a few extra keys above the function keys, but essentially the same layout as well.  It may be the lighting and shaping of the keyboard (Red Dragon especially) that makes them look flashy.

I keep reading this title as "I need a new boyfriend".  Keyboard....Boyfriend....new purchase...decisions decision!  Just make sure they're plug and play, right?

Every time I see this, I picture Huey Lewis singing "I need a new keyboard" instead of "I want a new drug"

This is the one I use. It's programmable but I haven't messed with it much. I think the price is pretty good considering bought it largely for the spill resistant keys and rainbow back-lighting.
