Democratic Presidential Campaigns for 2020

Why is it a travesty? If your kid hasn't said something cringe worthy to the public at large your kid has some awesome sense of place and timing. I went to a cousins house once and asked at the dinner table "Why did you pick that god awful pea soup green to paint your house?" because I thought it sounded adult but instead I hurt like a dozen feelings and got my spanking later. Maybe it's just me but I felt that Kamala Harris was just trying to fit in. I'd take that over a guy mocking a handicapped reporter in a campaign rally any day.

Also Kurgan should hopefully be along to school us on feminism.

I would think that one, no matter how old your kid is, as a parent you'd feel disappointed if they did something you probably taught them was wrong. I thought he was most upset that she said something to the effect of "I'm Jamaican of course I've smoked weed". I thought he was upset with her playing into that stereotype.

Kamala Harris has been thought of as the female Obama, and could be thought of as the black Hillary. Both work. Given that, it's easy to see both the real reasons (her questionable credentials and mixed record as a progressive, especially as San Francisco DA) and the fake reasons shat out by corporate media (racist and sexist "Bernie bro's) why she's distrusted by the left. Personally, I don't think she's the corporate shill that the hard alt-left is making her out to be, and I wouldn't be overly devastated were she to win the nomination, despite the fact that I'd be a pretty hard core Bernie bro were I an American.

What doesn't matter here is whether or not she's an "authentic" feminist. So what if she used a man she dated to advance her career? Who hasn't achieved career success via their connections and people they know? It's not done any other way in the real world.

What matters is her stance on crucial policy issues: medicare for all, a living wage, ending the wars, putting Wall Street back on a (at the minimum) Glass-Steagall leash, reinvigorating the unions, etc. She's cozier with identity politics than would be my preference, but I can look past that if that means a real progressive platform. Anyway, a good breakdown of Harris's candidacy here.

The traits of what constitutes feminism are pretty amorphous and differ from person to person, no? 3rd wave, raunch feminism etc.. They're going to have significantly different ideas of feminism than someone like Germaine Greer who still thinks trans women are mentally ill men who self mutilate (their genitals). So you know...

I disagree. I think what constitutes feminism, and what's been constituting it since the late 1980s now, is actually very easy. And it's the elevation of societal privilege: white male cisgender heterosexual privilege specifically, to deterministic concepts. Which is to say that if one's intersecting combination of identities skews towards marginalization, this confers something akin to a state of irrevocable grace that makes whatever they do good because they're the ones choosing to do it. A sort of secular antinomianism. Conversely, "privilege" becomes a kind of deterministic and irrevocable state of sin that can be used at will to handwave any claim they may make and deem any action they take an act of oppression. Strangely, this is quite appealing to a lot of people who do fall on the privileged side of the abacus. Moreso for them, I suspect. It's an acceptable way to confess one's sins and expiate one's guilt in a post religious society. This, I suspect, is why feminism is so popular among the social and cultural elite, despite its pretenses towards being for the marginalized.

Also Kurgan should hopefully be along to school us on feminism.

Wouldn't miss it.

Has anyone looked at Bernie Sanders past? It's kinda startling. The man was for lack of a better term, a bum. Being elected Mayor was the first steady job the man had. The man was broke(and homeless for a while) going into politics, but now he's wealthy with multiple homes. I'm not sure how his past would play out if he got past the primaries.

A bum who has been standing up for civil rights since the 60s, marched with MLK, took part in several of the most famous protests of all time, and always flies coach.

He's not interested in being rich. The fact that so many people think that a politico NOT being rich means they aren't qualified is kinda funny. Blue collar people better represents America than the 1%.

Kamala was huge with the prision industrial complex, and refused to indict steve mnuchin because his bank was her donor.

The pay-for-pay prison stuff is what is keeping me from wanting to endorse her-- especially when you consider the people who suffer most are African Americans.

If he gets past the primaries, which he won't, that story would play big to people who would never vote for him anyways. Otherwise it's a non-story that already came up plenty in 2016.

Bernie standing up for civil rights is great. Let's not overblow his place in history. He was one of a quarter million people who marched on Washington. And are you referring to the protests he participated in in college? Conversely he spent most of his post graduate life going around pushing socialist views while living of the dime of the people he reached out to. Hell when he was in office he praised tell Cuban and Soviet governments.

I'll give him credit. His lifelong goal was to get into politics. He accomplished that. I don't like what he's trying to sell to the masses.

As an aside, is it really magnanimous to not fly "first class"? I'm not a frequent flyer, but the upcharge for "first/business class" on anything 767 or smaller is a rip-off. And I'm a relatively tall guy. If you have the money then more power to you. I'm not paying an extra grand for some leg room on a flight to Chicago when I'm going to spend more time on the layover in Charlotte.

Dude I'm just taking about how first class isn't worth the upcharge on most planes. I'm not apologizing for using the word bum. I give the man credit for failing up. It's not a stretch to say the man would still be getting government assistance had he not won the mayor's race (by 10 votes).

It just seemed like an arbitrary dig because you're not a liberal so you hate him.

You do that shit all the time. You assume everything is left and right. I realized I didn't really know anything about Bernie aside from him being the socialist who Larry David impersonated. I heard stories, but figured they were sensationalized so I found out for myself. His post college life is nothing to write home about. Being asked to leave a hippie commune because you're not working is not a good look. It's fair to ask where he ends up if he doesn't get elected. I said for lack of a better term. Obviously he's not a bum now. I give him credit for improving his life, I just don't agree with his politics. I do not dislike the man.

Oh well yeah, Bernie is a total bum then.

Well, if Bernie had an R behind his name, he would be lauded by Fox News and GOP pundits as a hero and rags to riches story.
If Bernie had an R next to his name then he wouldn't be Bernie. The thing he does most that resembles conservative is his fight for veteran's rights and VA reform.

Hell you have Democrats going after self made billionaires like Bezos and Shultz

Triggered? That would probably be an appropriate adjective if I weren't commenting on the lighting rods of the left. I watch all of two shows in FNC. One daily show, and one of their weekend shows. Articles show up in my news feed, but so do articles from Huff Post, Daily Beast, and Washington Post. If I were "far" right I wouldn't have voted for a Democrat in the Tampa mayor's race yesterday.

I think that a lot of people make the mistake of believing that Trump supporters are hard right. And a good portion are, but there's a sizeable amount who aren't, and a sizeable amount of conservatives who don't support him.

AOC and Bernie are big news, and not because of the right. If they weren't heroes of the left, nobody on the right would care. But they're both pushing policies that are the antithesis of the right, or at least of more traditional conservatives. I suspect that there's an intersection of Trump supporters that would support a Green New Deal and Medicare For All if they were Trump ideas. And they actually aren't so far out of line for Trump, if not for the Democrats pushing it.

Well, for me I know my family mostly voted for Trump. They are hard right and very rigid. They still think he's doing a great job. So yeah, I paint with that broad brush. My newest swear in a car when I see a bonehead move like cutting across five lanes of traffic and no signal to make a exit is to say "Well, that guy's a Trump voter!" I think we could find middle ground if we were willing to compromise but the current leadership really likes division and keeps on making that wedge greater because they're making it a us vs. them thing.

With Tex and Poe gone you're the hardest to the right person for night, so you have to take the brunt of my hyperbole...
