Odine
Now I'm not a horror fanatic, but I know a great film when I see one. And unholy hells, the Apostle (on netflix) is a great movie. It has more than a slight debt to the Wicker Man, but also Dagon and gore porn like Hostel. But even with the brutality of the latter influences it has more depth to it than your average horror film. Its just so well written. Tense, atmospheric and dark. My poor wife got sucked right in and when the violence came she was very unprepared. Lol. Some of it was even a bit much for me, but even so i thoroughly enjoyed it. It just keeps ramping up and up. Set in 1905 off the coast of Scotland centered around a cult living in isolation. If you like horror give this a watch if you haven't already.
Guest El Chalupacabra
Haven't heard of it before. Sounds interesting. I really liked the original version of Wickerman (the one with Christopher Lee and Edward Woodward).
Tank
I'd say it's level of borrowing from Wicker Man was so great it's the only thing that kept me from super-loving it. Still definitely worth a watch though, very well made. If you like ambient, atmospheric horror, you should be watching Haunting of Hill House. Guest El Chalupacabra
I've heard of that one, but haven't seen it yet. Been meaning to. Ghost stories are what I like best.
Iceheart
I adore The Wicker Man (the original, not the BEEEESSSSS), and beyond Island Housing A Religious Cult, I thought they went in enough of a different direction that I stopped comparing the two about 15 minutes in or so. I mean, The Wicker Man has a flourishing community where everyone lives happily and they just happen to need a volunteer human sacrifice once a year. The Apostle has a couple of guys torturing a fertility goddess for personal gain, and it's not going well for anyone involved. I have to say, I Cannot Handle Gore/Body Horror, and I watched this with some apprehension since the reviews made a lot about the violence in the second half. But I think they oversold the gore, I didn't have any problems watching this. Or I'm not nearly as grossed out by gore as I tell myself I am. Oh, hey, you know, at some point in this post I should probably say that I also really liked this movie.
Kyrian
I enjoyed it too. It was messed up, but I enjoyed it more than I usually enjoy horror. I also like Martin Sheen, I think he's great in basically everything he's in. Dan Stevens' overacted in this, but I think it fit a lot with his character, so it worked for me.
