Tank: Your comments about Luke are turning me around on that scene, BUT I wish they hadn't actually had him ignite his lightsaber. He had a moment of weakness, thought he needed to kill Ben, but couldn't. Just...don't ignite the saber. And perhaps have more of a confrontation than just contemplating it while Ben is sleeping?

Also, cool it about the poopy books thing, we know you don't like them. :p Luke in the later EU is quite often written out of character, and makes a crap-ton of mistakes with his apprentices. Contrasting him to the EU isn't why people don't like that scene. It's because it's TOO much like the EU.

This was the first Star Wars movie where I've left the theater not liking it after the first viewing.

Everything felt wrong. Snoke was a chump. Luke was an idiot. Finn's job is to get knocked out. Laura Dern and the whole escape thing were both just generic sci-fi.

Leia using the Force was cool, but it really just reminded me of Guardians of the Galaxy, GotG did the freezing woman in space scene better, though.

Poe being the hotshot fighter pilot who can't think about anything other than blowing stuff up? Also cliché and doesn't really match being sent on a super secret mission in TFA.

Yoda felt forced and lame, and Luke never learned the lesson that Yoda was teaching - he didn't realize his mistake and become a teacher, instead he just decided to die by astral projection, which was almost as stupid as his mom's death.

Did not like, but willing to give Episode 9 a chance.

And good lord if you ever go to Canto Bright let a valet park your car. I forget who said it earlier, you end up in jail but they don't tow your ship? Some might say this is a good thing, but I have no clue where they are going with this story. You have one movie left and I'm not sure there is a scenario where they can wrap this up neatly. I could be wrong.

I was never Ma-Rey Sue person, but this did little to squash that argument. Especially when you take into account that a couple of weeks ago she was stuck Jaku.

Im with SD. Snoke was in there. Lukes only mistake was blaming himself.

Also... I got it. Snoke = Sifo Dyas.

Two of the biggest plot danglers solved.

That would ALMOST work. Too bad JJ Abrams is coming back for Episode 9, so I am sure instead of that, we will get even more unresolved plot danglers.

This is almost like Tank and Poe agreeing, because I agree with you on that 1000%! I am sure the Earth will darken for 3 days, now.

OMG, time to poke my eyes out and impose self-banishment from the internet for a quarter century.

(You know i am just kidding, right, MJ? But I do still agree with you on Luke.)

I thought the entire first scene with Snoke and Kylo was meant exactly to address those arguments. Snoke calls Kylo out on losing to a girl who had never held a lightsaber before. Also, the whole idea that Rey grew stronger as Kylo did.

I'm just saying they did nothing to quite that argument. That never really bothered me. Smoke might as well have said "you lost to a girl. Neener neener!"

Did anyone else think for a split second Luke was going to go Tom Green on that......thing?

OMG 2 times in one day! Agreed. Kylo and Rey are yin and yang. Equal and opposite reactions. Darkness spreads and light rises to meet it. As one grows stronger, so does the other.

It was his RotJ green saber.

Cool. I was pondering whether it was possible for Anakin's lightsaber to have found its way back to Luke between RotJ and TFA and then on to Maz. I suppose someone will write a novel on that journey, though.

And Ben's was blue at the time. I didn't get a good look at the hilt, but it seemed to me that it had some resemblance to Anakin's\Luke's blue saber. Not that it really answers your question, but I thought it was interesting.

I think Poe's arc in this movie was about him taking over for Leia as leader of the Resistance. I'm sure the original intent was for her to die on screen in 9 but this works too. He has now learned the lessons he needs to be the great leader they require to replace all the ones they lost.

I don't feel like writing down all of my thoughts, especially as they would just echo many of all of yours. I liked it in spite of its problems, which I think are more numerous than TFA's. It had so many cool moments. Even though the general scene it was in was mentioned, I LOVED seeing Rey pick up Kylo's saber and fight with it. Seeing the protagonist with a red saber was amazing.

I loved how Luke's astral actions exactly echo his take down of Rey's earlier thinking that he would go take on the First Order by himself using the legend of Luke Skywalker.

It seems that I liked DJ more than most of you. I was afraid they were going to try to give him a Han moment when Finn and Rose were about to be executed, so I was relieved to see it was ultimately BB8 that rescued them.

I'm sure I will post more thoughts later.

TLJ vs. TFA

I think TLJ had more great moments and ideas, but also more problems and things I just flat out don't like, but I think it's biggest problem is it dragged so much in the middle. TFA had good pacing.

I think TLJ was a superior movie technically; I think it was a better crafted movie, but my opinion on it is that I like TFA much more (at least after one viewing). If I can get over certain decisions I may like it more later. I just didn't...like the feeling it gave me when I left the theater.

I also enjoyed all the questions TFA raised, while TLJ kind of squashed them all and feels kind of anti-climactic. The only question I feel TLJ raised is where does this handful of survivors all on one ship regroup?

Well said, Dana-kin. I felt a lot happier when I left the theater the first time with TFA, than TLJ.

The flaws in TFA bothered me later, sure, but I do remember being excited for more Star Wars episode movies when I first saw TFA. I didn't have that feeling when I left TLJ.

What I liked:

Yoda's ghost. I liked that he appeared to continue teaching Luke. Ironically enough, he gave Luke the same advice Kylo was trying to give Rey - to let go of the past. Yoda made fun of Luke for holding on the those old books. Kylo told Rey to admit her family wasn't coming back. I wonder if that was intentional or did the writers just stumble on to this coincidence?

General Hux was much better in this movie. He didn't work for me in TFA, I thought he came across as a Harry Potter-type snooty villain caricature. I liked the scenes he was in in TLJ. Him getting ready to shoot Kylo when he was down only to pull up when Kylo wakes up. When you think about it, why wouldn't he? Even though Kylo started to come to, he was still groggy and not ready for someone to take shots at him. Hux blew his only chance to take full charge of the Empire, er...First Order.

The Falcon flying through the caverns being chased by Ties while John Williams' score from the OT played on. THAT gave me goosebumps. Made me realize just how badly these new scores pale in comparison to what he was doing back then.

What I didn't like:

The rest of the movie. I agree with what most everyone else has said here regarding the negative aspects of the film. So I'll just add some thoughts I have right now about it.

Although I loved Yoda's appearance, that was terrible CGI. And why did they use Yoda's ESB appearance? I swear it was as if they just CGI'd ESB Yoda into TLJ and changed his lines. I've seen ESB too many times to not recognize it was the exact same footage. Another complaint here is when he had thunder strike the tree to burn it down. So Force ghosts now can control the weather?

I thought Leia slapping Poe before demoting him was out of character.

It seemed like all the characters were being introduced through some kind of cartoon comedy. When Poe's ship is damaged in the beginning, BB-8 tries to plug up the fuse, then another busts, so he grows another arm to plug that one, and then another breaks, grow another arm...and on and on and on. Reminded me of those old cartoons when a dam has holes with water gushing through and the character stands there growing arms out of nowhere to continue plugging the holes. And like all cartoons, BB-8 finally gives up and bangs the whole console with his head to "fix it." Later at the casino he's mistaken for a slot machine and actually has a slot where can conveniently stuff all those coins so he can later use as bullets. In the meantime you could hear the coins clanging around inside him like a piggy bank while he rolled around with Finn and Rose in search of the code breaker.

Maz is in the middle of a shoot out with lasers coming from all sides, but she is able to have a casual conversation with everyone while tumbling around to avoid the fire. And where exactly was the camera she was talking to during all that?

Luke throwing the lightsaber away after Rey hands it to him like it's a piece of trash...I read a review that said this scene played out like a Saturday Night Live parody skit.

LDH you raise a good point with Yoda. It begs the question: what exactly can force ghosts do? What can't they do? Obi-Wan says they become more powerful than you van possibly imagine, but up until now all they've ever done is give advice.

Another thing I've always wondered: is the force ghost the person individually, or is it like some collective force consciousness? For example, when force ghost Yods says "Luke move on, let the old ways die", is that YODA's individual opinion, or is that merely the force speaking to Luke using a medium he can understand?
