The Trump Administration 2017-

There's a saying that if you go far left enough you end up owning a gun. It's shocking to me that people overreact or go to the wildest fullest extent when honestly a bet a bunch of American's would just like stability and middle ground and to be able to move on with our lives.

The problem isn’t the majority, it’s a dangerous minority, and that dangerous minority dragging people into it.

I don’t have a gun, but on the off chance there is violence directed towards individuals/homes, I will borrow one from a relative.

Because they think they speak for the “real America” and the evil socialist Democrats are a minority trying to steal the country and ruin it.

I've got two very good friends that have fallen into the Cult of Trump.  One got out, one got in deeper.

The first guy is self-admittedly a die hard libertarian.  He was a die hard on the Ron Paul train years ago and never looked back.  His views tend to weigh more on the old school conservative side of things, he wants limited government intervention into anything, a huge cut in spending, all kinds of stuff like that.  He's a pretty religious guy, but he thinks that it isn't the business of the government.  He was all aboard on the  bandwagon four years ago because he seemed to think that a business mindset to make a lot of cuts was something Trump would be a cheerleader of.  I think he kind of rode he coattails of that campaign and was all about things like strict immigration laws and such as well.

Now, he can't stand anything Trump.  He came around in the last year once I think his rational side saw the ineptitude of everything going on.  And this was prior to COVID.  He has a lot of family who are elderly or have health issues, and unlike most conservatives in Alabama, he's taken it very, very seriously.  It's encouraging to see a once-diehard turn into a Never Trumper simply because of reasoning.

The second guy I know is someone who just treats politics like a team sport.  I've known him over twenty years and I know him well enough to know that he doesn't even care about the issues at play.  If he can work a full time job and then come home to goof off with his kids, play video games, and work on his hobbies, he doesn't care about the outside world.  But he has been very fanatical about things like college football and fanboy topics.  Back in the day, he'd argue someone for hours about why N64 was better than Playstation, often making stuff up to prove his points.  That's translated to his political fanaticism very easily.  I think he just enjoys the "winning" and enjoys picking arguments.

A lot of people would tire of it or just move on to something else, but not him.  He's gotten deep roots into QAnon and other bullshit like that, and it's frankly beyond the point of return.  I hadn't talked to him in around a year until recently, and I just made the decision to not even engage him.  Fact and reason does not matter in this case, so it's just better off to forget it and let it go.

The next month or two is going to be interesting.

RE people and guns.  I am a gun owner, but I just shake my head at the loud boisterous gun fanatics that are always crying how they are on the verge of losing the right to tote a semi auto or auto weapon at calibers that was originally designed to shoot down airplanes.  How much protection do you need?  Do you think you are going to overthrow the government of the country with the most powerful and technically proficient military of the world?  Or, like that idiot kid who decided it was a good idea to carry an AR15 to a protest, and ended up killing people.  Why was it necessary to carry a rifle there, especially when it wasn't even where he lived?!

People like that to me are just scared, insecure little boys (or girls) who don't respect the responsibility of gun ownership, and don't value human life.  I think they are as a whole, vile people.

It just goes back to having a desperate need to be victimized. If they aren’t actually victims, they’ll make something up so they are victims.

I drive past a yard sign every day now that reads “Trump 2020: No More Bullshit.” Uh, Trump’s been in office for four years. What kind of bullshit do you want less of, exactly?

And that's the other thing. They've been in power four years, and they STILL act like they're the underdog. That's how the whole shadow government, QAnon bullshit started. They're in power and they still have to pretend they're not in order to feel good about themselves.

I grew up in a town of these people. I have nothing but loathing for them, and very little sympathy left anymore.

I hate to be the voice of reason in the room, cause I love stirring the pot and sprinkling in some zealotry.. but people need to stop viewing their other as scum because of differences in political views. None of us get the same news. Everything is catered to the individual user to reinforce their belief system and prejudices. Irrespective of political party lines, social politics etc. None of us are getting the same information, so to expect others to be able to draw what you might consider "rational" conclusions about the state of affairs is a lost cause. But don't hate your fellow human because of their ignorance. If you have to, hate them for their stupidity..things they KNOWINGLY support and perpetuate.

Yeah, I watched social dilemma..

Like I said about violence, the problem isn’t the majority. The majority of Trump voters are decent people. The majority of gun owners are different people. But there is a loud minority that makes it really easy to see the entire other side as horrible. But there are people I know, love, and enjoy spending time with who are voting Trump.

But, I’m probably the most centrist person here, and the stuff coming from the left isn’t nearly as loud or scary as the stuff coming from the right.

And back to guns, I don’t think anyone should have a gun in their home unless they know how to care for it and own it safely. When I was 15, I spent a summer with my cousin who owns guns, and the first day he taught me gun safety, taught me how to disassemble and clean a gun, and then took me to a shooting range within a week so I would know how to use it. Rule one was to never even consider pointing a gun at someone unless you’re willing to kill them. But the same cousin has had one opportunity to use his gun, which was on a burglar armed with a knife. He had the burglar sit on the couch until the police arrived.

A neighbor of mine had one of those signs.  In one of the few cases I back an HOA decision, they made him take the sign down in 24 hours.  LOL!

Of course they don't expect to overthrow the government. They LOVE the government. Just look at all the SUPPORT THE TROOPS stickers and thin blue line flags they have. They LOVE it.

You worded it perfectly too, Zathras. You're a gun owner. They're gun fanatics. There's a massive difference.

Yeah, where I live, we have the occasional idiot who openly carries a gun on their hip.  Here.  Where the gun nuts already won the right to carry concealed without a permit.  Actions like that are for only one thing: intimidate others.  It has nothing to do with personal protection, but inspiring fear.    I say someone who wants to cause fear like that, is full of fear themselves like any other bully.  Like I said, scared little boys.

I made the choice to own guns, but responsibly.  I don't carry guns, unless it is too and from the range, which actually has been a while. Otherwise they stay locked up.

Like seriously though.

I'm exploring this right now. I've asked my therapist to help me because I came out of a discussion with a woman I really like, who is smart and who disagrees with everything I hold dear and the same for me to her. I can't 'fix' her (nor does she need fixing) so I decided to fix me. My therapist offered some homework. I'm to watch "the Vow", check out a journalist named Matt Talby, a book called "Why Liberalism Failed" by Patrick Deenan and a podcast called "Unspeakable" by Meghan Daum. Anyone know any of these?

If you need to carry a gun when you go outside to feel safe or free, I question the very concept of freedom and safety these people hold dear.

I can understand gun ownership for hunting, home defense and these sort of things.. but if you need to be armed to go outside? Says a lot about the correlation between the illusion of safety and freedom.
