Well, to be fair, the cheap, gimmicky "let's wait 20 minutes into the episode until we reveal who got it, but until then let's play flashbacks and continue to frustrate the audience," and the continual drum beat of funereal joylessness and melancholy has a LOT to do with why I am out. I can take a main character dying. Maybe even in a gory way, though this episode didn't need to show blah-blah's head as a pile of red goo, but there is no message from the show other than torture porn and "eff everyone else."

Not saying it is you per se, but I've read other forums and it seems Ep 7.1 defenders are taking the stance against people who are done with TWD are just a bunch of people who are squeamish. You don't watch like TWD a show for 6 seasons if you are squeamish. You stop watching because you are bored with it, and tired of the repetitiveness, lack of pay off, and don't like it's message and the direction it's going.

Right-- all totally legit reasons, I agree. The show is exhausting. I just mean that horror fans watching just for the horror who are in it for the scares and gore will be the last people to jump ship over Glenn.

I'm in the middle somewhere, I am a horror nerd, but I'm also a narrative snob, so I totally get it.

That's probably true. Some people tune in just to see the gore. That's fine too, just not my cup of tea. I expect at some point, if it isn't there already, that will be the only fans left.

As this show goes on, the only constant is "let's push the violence further." They went a little too far for even my tastes this time. We get it. No one is safe, and everyone is a piece of meat. But there was no point to this other than to just spend an episode and watch someone's head get caved in. There literally is no other point. For, I'd say at least since season 3, no change to the world these characters are in, except for the worse. The character development is either static, or we watch them become less and less sympathetic. Last season showed little difference between what Rick has become and what the Governor was. I am still trying to figure out why he is still considered a protagonist, or the other survivors for that matter. This season premier is exactly as some described: torture porn.

Too far? Honestly? Anyone remember this the same series that did not soft sell main character Dale's intestines ripped out (season 2), main character Hershel's head hacked off (season 4), a child shot in the head (also season 4) or any other gruesome deaths? Brutality comes with the territory.

Rather than rehash what I'v already said, I am going to simply say read my 10 posts since the one you decided to take out of context and partially quote. That point was addressed already.

On another note, this week's episode was great with its focus on Morgan and Carol. They pulled off King Ezekiel nicely, which I was "worried" about because it could have come off horribly. Carol's reactions to the Kingdom and her interactions with Ezekiel made it work, though. It was a very good call by the writers to put a substantial amount of levity in this episode after last week's unending bleakness.

The idea of the series "going too far" with violence or being "all about gore" rings hollow, and its funny to even read/hear that, since the same end of WD critics have often accused the series of being nothing more than a nighttime soap opera with zombies, instead of the "real horror" or their zombie movies of choice. It cannot be both.

I rarely quote Kirkman, but he's often said one of his reasons for creating TWD was his longtime dissatisfaction with zombie films that end with everyone killed off, or no resolution to the survivors' lives. Well...that's the point of The Walking Dead, but being a series framed in "survival horror" and a world where the rule of law no longer exists, occasionally, someone will fall victim to the worst of human instincts. It might be shocking--but its supported by the character motivations, not there to be the overused "torture porn" or shock for the Hell of it. In every act of violence--no matter how bloody--there was a sound reason for the event, and led to major character development in its wake.

Jacen123: the Kingdom was set up well enough, but Carol's need to isolate herself (albeit a short distance from the Kingdom) has to reach some conclusion. She's been walking around in a state of depression since 4B, and almost moving toward the point of losing purpose. I hope that changes, since the showrunners have added a wealth of fascinating things to a character originally intended to die early in season 3.

This episode was boring and I hated everyone with the exception of the CGI tiger cuz it's not real. King "Easy-Kill" and his Knights of LARP are too weird for me to relate to at all. I'm less interested in getting to know them and more interested in how the Saviors are going to wipe them out. I envision this happening similarly to the Last Samurai. These weirdos are going to charge the line on horseback with swords raised an the Saviors are going to line up with guns and introduce them to the wonders of gunpowder. Bye bye king "Easy-Kill".

I completely agree that Carol's isolation quest needs to come to an end, but it seems like they've reached that point with her by having her live by herself nearby the Kingdom. With this show being what it is, that can't possibly last for very long, but hopefully they will give Carol a new direction once they break up that situation.

I enjoyed this episode a lot. Nice break from Rick and Co.

I wasn't too keen on Carol and Morgan's storylines last year but for some strange reason it seemed to make a lot of sense in this episode. I've come to rationalise that their motivations were polar opposites and they are starting to meet somewhere in the middle with Carol shying away from her killing nature and Morgan having to take a life to save Carol. I do hope they meet somewhere in the middle soon though.

Oh... the Tiger was awesome!!

Why is everyone so excited over this tiger? It didn't actually DO anything. A CGI tiger that does nothing doesn't do a thing for me. The MGM tiger is equally impressive and menacing.

I also wonder why King Nothig opened up to Carol revealing himself a mere half an hour after his character was barely established. They could've waited until the next episode.

Mate, its a ****ing Tiger. Tigers don't have to DO anything to be awesome. They're awesome simply because they're tigers. And one thats friendly to a human? Sheeeeeeeeeeit.

Pretty much the most ideal companion to have in a post-apocalyptic senario would be a tiger (or a loyal big cat of some type) to tear your enemies to shreds and instill fear/respect in everyone else.

I'll admit the only reason the Tiger exists in the story at all, is cause some comic book artist drew a dude sitting on a throne with a tiger sat next to him and went "that looks cool" and they rolled with it. It doesn't really make logical sense, nor is it that plausible, but fuck it. Its a ****ing TIGER and TIGERS RULE.

That, and its a tiger in a series with zombies. Who is not looking forward to that conflict?

  • 3 weeks later...

TWD is not "suffering" as in AMC is ready to pull the plug. The season premiere was so huge, that any drop off will likely pale in comparison. Other shows--especially fantasy/adventure series (think CW) would kill for TWD's average ratings and cultural status.

True dat.

They shot the finale a couple weeks ago and have no plans to throw in the towel. AMC is so invested in making it a forever-franchise that they aren't likely to cancel. They are way too invested with 3 shows on the air, one of which costs net to nothing to make and sells similar ad buy rates as the series itself. If the season tanks they'll crack the whip, cut the budget and demand changes-- but it would have to be drastic for them to full on cancel it.
