What if I don't want to go back to the 50s?

Well, you may be ok covering up your baby while you breastfeed, but here in Houston, it's akin to torture. But far be it for me to tell another woman how to feed her baby.

Yeah, I've got you beat in any hot/humid standoff. And I rarely ever see a woman breastfeeding in public without covering herself at least.

This is really more of a internet plus seal clappers on The View type of thing.

One thing I really dislike is when people dot all their i's and cross all their t's, making every statement correctly, then smugly pat themselves on the back for being "right" when they are obviously fairly clueless about what they're talking about.

I'm obviously talking about Poe here, who has recently become the only Lyceum poster aside from CM in the last 4-5 years to stir me to annoyance (which, of course, means 40% of all Lyceum posters piss me off).

That said, while I disagree with him on the issue, I think he's 100% right about the mocking, conversation-killing seal-clapping that's going on. That's a pretty lame tactic.

Sometimes people's posts and opinions in here are so ignorant and juvenile, mocking is really the only recourse. A good public shaming would be better.

Guest El Chalupacabra

It's similar to the lactivists that organize mass boob-ins when a business already has provided private rooms to go to, and/or said mother can simply feed their kid discretely with a towel covering things as much as possible,

:lol::lol::lol::lol:

I can't even! This is too much!!

:lol::lol::lol::lol:

Please, oh great and wise childless man, please tell us more about what women can "simply" do to feed a baby! Yes! Cover the boob top and smother your child! Be banished to a backroom so that your baby can eat! Nobody wants to see the top of your breast, don't you know that, silly woman? Babies only need to eat in the dark, with no fresh air, out of sight!

:lol::lol::lol::lol:

Oh man...this is great. Please, pray tell, what else can a mother "simply" do to care for her child in the most natural way possible? How else can a baby eating possibly "offend"?

Seriously, you're going to tell a woman who is enjoying herself with her family to please excuse herself to another room so that her baby can eat? Or that she needs to "cover" up? Cover up what?!? Her breast?! Because suddenly her breast is no longer just an aesthetically pleasing sexual plaything? It's a food source now (GASP!!), and therefore cannot be seen like all the aesthetically pleasing sexual playthings that are on display everywhere?

Thanks for proving my point, there Cerena.

Moth to a flame!

I had hoped to get under your skin with that one. Or more properly, your boob. :lol:

Since there is a small chance GGaB was legitimately curious and not just chumming:

In simplest terms, "Social Justice Warrior" (SJW) is used to describe somebody with progressive views, in particular identity politics, and especially feminism.

Apparently, it used to be a compliment for somebody who cares deeply about inequality, somebody who would tirelessly stick up for the little guy and speak truth to power -- not in the original, non-violent philosophical meaning of the phrase, but in the more general "standing up to to the various systems of oppression in this world" sense. Now, I grew up in some of the most progressive cities in the United States and don't remember it being used this way, but that's what the record says, so I'll go with it.

About a decade ago, it started morphing into more of a pejorative than a compliment. This, I remember.

Now it is used to describe people who just can't stfu about their identity politics: people who get worked up ("triggered," you might say) over the trivial annoyances and slights sane people learned to get over in grade school; people who wear their group affiliations as a team jersey, whose political statements serve less as a means of conveying cogent arguments augmented by coherent moral framework than a means of exorcising personal demons and acquiring social status. Most importantly, the new definition refers to their intense hostility toward dissent, and their extremely illiberal practice of avoiding or shutting down reasoned debate by disparaging those with differing viewpoints as uncultured, blinded by privilege, or straight up evil Hitler (almost always with the aforementioned chorus of supportive, clapping seals nearby -- very important, since a lot of this is a game of social status).

While true, you can't deny it's also become a go to insult for conservatives to hurl at pretty much any liberal sentiment spoken aloud.

Yeah, like many pejoratives, it has been used in far too broad of strokes and is losing specific meaning.

George Orwell once wrote about how the overuse of "Fascist!" as an epithet had drained the word of its economic and political implications, causing it to devolve into a shorthand label for any arrogant, anti-liberal/working-class person or people, over time finally losing all specific meaning in general parlance, becoming little more than a synonym for "Bully!"

"SJW!" still means something fairly specific as of April 20, 2016, but it is definitely headed down the same road as "Fascist!"

Jesus christ, can this thread go back to not being about breastfeeding for goodness sakes?

Pong- and I say this sincerely- this may be the best description of the SJW that I've ever read. Well done, just outstanding.

And I mean that. Even if you think I'm the only one that's ever stirred you to annoyance, a curiosity (weak point?) that I'm unsure why you'd admit. I'll take it as a badge of honor I suppose. For the record, I can't think of a time that you've ever annoyed me, over 15+ years.

True, though "cuck" is gaining ground fast.

As Pong mentions, it's a misuse of the term SJW. "Political correctness" has been bastardized in the same sort of way. The term "political correctness" began as a kind of in-joke among leftists, warning one another against orthodoxy for orthodoxy's sake - a pitfall in any organized belief system. Not all SJWs are social liberals. This has actually driven a sort of schism on the center left - the whole Bill Maher + Sam Harris vs Ben Affleck debate being perhaps exemplary.

What I think truly defines the SJW is their overarching sense of entitlement. The identity politics are merely instrumental to this, and similar attitudes have been displayed at other times towards religious, nationalist or revolutionary ideas. They regard themselves, or the ideas they espouse, to be of such transcendent greatness as to constitute a natural and automatic claim on everyone's agreement and loyalty. This drives all of the kinds of obnoxious behaviors that they display. Thus, when they are questioned or challenged, their response is always one of a kind of self righteous incredulousness, rather than a reasoned and rational response. I'm sure we won't have to scroll too far back to find good examples in this thread, even.

The right will naturally try to portray the most absurd of SJW nonsense as being representative of liberal thought in general. This is just politics - it's not like the left doesn't also do this, tarring all conservatism as raging KKK and so on. It's just the way political discourse these days works.

Eh, political insults are like that. Heck, they're not even use them correctly a good chunk of the time. "Socialist", "Tea Party", and "neo-con" became practically meaningless from their original context as they started being used as insults. In a lot of way, calling a person by those titles should just make the user look ignorant.

I keep thinking of comic book movie casting and how is anyone's gender or race isn't what was originally ion the page, half my feeds explodes into comments about how the SJWs are making everyone PANDER.

Right now it's hilarious on both sides. Fury that the Ancient One is Asian male but being playing by a white actress, and fury that Iron Fist is a white male being played by... a white male.

The conversation threads on these issues, if you can call them 'conversations,' are beautiful trainwrecks.

What's funny to me is that I honestly believe there are legit points to be made all around. Not equivalent points, mind you, as people calling for a more diverse cast of superheroes and fewer female props have the stronger case and it's not even close, but I do believe there are ideas of value on all sides. A very real and productive conversation could actually occur if anybody wanted it, but at least right now, it appears the goal is simply being oppositional, scoring points and shouting down the "other side" until the discussion looks something like a crisp spring day in Berlin, 1945.

On the flip side, while I find the fights entertaining and appreciate their beauty, I do wonder (not in a concern-troll sort of way, but genuinely curious) how helpful a lot of the more recent campaigns have been? I follow a lot of SF/Superhero/Nerd stuff on social media, and in the last year or so, many of them have morphed from "Jessica Jones is rad. I'm so glad we're finally getting shows like this now!" to "**** this garbage show and its subtly racist tropes TODAY!" at the first whiff of anything awkward or insensitive, either because they have nothing better to write and know it will generate a lot of clicks, or because they have fallen so deep into the postcolonial feminist rabbit hole, they can't enjoy any film/television/literature without deconstructing it through that lens and lamenting its inevitable imperfections ("This 11 second clip from last night's episode of The Flash FAILS the Bechdel test; sorry Barry: we're so over you!").

We are getting more diverse casting in SF/Superhero/Nerd stuff, but at the same time, there's a kind of eye-rolling burnout that occurs when the focus moves from entertainment value/acting and production quality/narrative/emotional impact, etc. to ticking off the race, gender, and sexuality (if known) of every member in the cast and cross-checking them with the characters's dialogue, social behaviors, and skillset. That has to be exhausting.
