The TV Poll: Comedy

It's aged perfectly fine to me. I don't even think it is just nostalgia for me (though, I am sure that doesn't hurt). It is still one of my go-to shows if I have nothing else particularly going on at a given time and I always enjoy it still regardless of the number of times I've seen the episode.

I realized that my list for this poll is basically three different archetypes: medical comedy, office comedy, and comedy about nothing. I think I will try to restrict myself to one of each later on.

I was wondering if Seinfield would get a single vote. It hasn't aged very well.

It's aged in that it's clearly very 90s when you look at the clothes and the hair, but a lot of the comedy is pretty timeless. And I appreciate the no "very special episode."

Roseanne would have made my list had the show not become her soapbox in the last couple seasons.

Community
The Simpsons (a shame it was canceled after just ten seasons)
Parks & Recreation
Night Court
I Love Lucy

This is harder-- even the funniest of shows can take a turn for the worse if their run is too long.

That's why The Office only ranks an Honorable Mention in my book. Seasons 2-6+ were A-plus, but Steve Carell's exit should've been the series finale.

And its early years expanded the styles and rhythms of what was possible in TV comedy. It was a trendsetter, not just a "really good" show.

Same line of reasoning is why Community tops the list despite its banal fourth season -- what came before and after was extra-strength and compensated. I'd rank The Office maybe sixth, but I hold very little nostalgia for its final seasons.

The early years of the Simpsons are so great that it makes the rest of the run irrelevant. It's like if a QB had 7 or 8 straight years of 80% completions, 75 TD and 0 INTs and won the SB MVP in all of those years. Even if he played a long time after that at a much lower level, the greatness at his peak would still make him easily the greatest QB of all time.
