pavonis
Trump is Andrew Jackson, which means Cruz and Kasich are Adams and Clay. It's so nice when history echoes itself. It reduces the problem to a previously-solved one. Very satisfying.
Pong Messiah
They both have big egos and hold bigger grudges and are hated by "the establishment." But after that, I'm not sure the comparison holds up. There are plenty of things to despise Jackson for, but consider this: he was born of immigrants (not wealthy ones), Jackson's father died before he was born, his mother died when he was 14. Despite the rough upbringing, he was self made; managed to become a lawyer, once calmly killed a dude in a duel after getting shot in the chest, had a military record to speak of (including the battle of New Orleans), and even won the presidency despite everybody supposedly hating his guts. Can anybody honestly imagine Trump being where he is today had he been born into a single parent immigrant family without much income? He'd still be a carny I'm sure, but on a much smaller stage. I definitely hear the "echos of history" here, but I think the class and life experience (not just due to being centuries apart) of Jackson and Trump are different in too many ways for the comparison to fit outside of general temperament and relationship with authority figures. pavonis
Mere details, Pong. I reduced the complex to the simple. Therefore the situation is now fully analyzed. You're welcome!
Pong Messiah
Cruz is making remarks in Knightstown, IN right now... what a disgusting creature. I don't even know what he's saying. It is all gibberish, due to those nasty wet collisions between his forked tongue and melty wax lips. Ugh. **** Cruz. **** Texas. A pox on all their houses. Justus
Hate all you want, but he's the most intellectually sound of the five left on both sides--yes, that includes Hillary. That matters more than someone trying to write himself into history / inflate his ego (Trump), someone else thinking she's entitled to win because of name/legacy association and gender identity (guess who) or a moldy creature thinking there's a practical application of go-nowhere, 1970 college socialist fantasies in the U.S.

Not saying Trump or Hillary or Sanders are great people. I don't love any of 'em, but Cruz is clearly the worst of the worst this year has to offer. Ms. Spam
yeah, I gotta go with Pong on this, Justus. Hillary maybe what we end up with because... well experience? Cruz is my Congressman and I can't say there's anything he's done or accomplished that I liked. He even failed at getting Obamacare repealed. Pong Messiah
So true. Cruz is the worst ever. I'd be embarrassed for anybody I know who non-ironically supports Donald Trump. Pong Messiah
I'd be embarrassed for anybody I know who non-ironically supports Donald Trump.why Present company excluded, support for Trump generally indicates a frustration -- a real frustration that should not be disregarded -- coupled with the lack of historical/philosophical/political sophistication to understand exactly why said frustration is being felt. Furthermore, there oftentimes seems to be a lack of interest in putting in the intellectual work that would be necessary to attain an understanding. There are targets aplenty to blame for these feelings and a desire to lash out, sure, but the thought process rarely seems to go much deeper than that gut level reaction. Of course there are intelligent, college educated people who are voting for Trump, too. There are also plenty of mouthbreathers supporting Cruz, Bernie, and Hillary, but I've seen enough of this "incurious pain" in Trump supporters to believe it's kind of its own thing -- and I do think that is an embarrassing way to live/conduct oneself. I hope that makes sense. I'm on a hydrocodone diet for my torn rotator today and having a genuinely hard time forming complete thoughts. One thing to add... I hate to admit this, and I'm not trying to throw you a bone as the site's lone Trump supporter, but his foreign policy address was actually quite good -- shockingly so -- and if it had been given by anybody other than Trump, I would have thought "This person is absolutely going to be president." Really curious to see how the 24/7 pundits parse it later today.

While I agree with the "shockingly good considering it was from Trump" assessment, the speech itself wasn't that great. I think the way it was simultaneously non-interventionist and patriotic, compared to the typical GOP "USA! USA! USA!" interventionist or Democratic "I'm ashamed of America (but still kind of interventionist)" flavor foreign policy made it kind of novel -- but it wasn't super. That being said, I'm wondering why only Trump (or rather, his supporters) seems to trigger this feeling in you. Couldn't you say the same thing about SJWs supporting Clinton? That their support is rooted more in a gut level frustration than an intellectual inquiry requiring historical perspective? The source of said frustration is certainly different, but is it not also an "incurious pain?" (great phrase, btw)

The source of said frustration is certainly different, but is it not also an "incurious pain?" (great phrase, btw)Less so with Clinton supporters (though living in Portland, my sample size is small), but I'd say the same holds true with Bernie supporters. Like Trump supporters, Bernie supporters are frustrated, and they are dealing with harsh economic and cultural realities. Many of their wounds are self-inflicted, but many are due to circumstances out of their control (e.g. woke up seven years ago finding themselves competing with people who have master's degree for a 24-hour a week barista gig) Like Trump, Bernie is a narcissist (moral narcissist is still a narcissist) who offers convenient scapegoats (Wall St., the 1%, polluting corporations, "The Establishment," etc.) fitting the narrative his audience craves, and he is vague and unrealistic when it comes to solutions; I'd argue that Trump's stupid "huge wall" is more realistic and tenable than the notion of "free college" and "$15!" I think I'm less bothered by Bernie and his supporters because:As weak of an "inevitable candidate" as Bernie is up against, I never gave him much of a chance outside of Clinton being indicted. Michigan was exciting, but the math just never made sense. I've been patting my Bernie friends on the head and saying "That's nice, dear." for almost a year now, but never believed in The Bern. Trump on the other hand... I doubted him early on as a joke candidate, but at this point, I honestly would not be shocked if he flips the numbers, winning not only the GOP nod but the presidency. Tl;dr: Bernie was always just a silly idea to me; Trump may be a silly reality.Me and Bernie's supporters tend to speak the same cultural language. Bigoted of me? Prolly. But I'm just more comfortable in that crowd. Sorry! The "bad guys" Bernie promises to save us from (bankers, polluters, "The Establishment") differ from Trump's in that are by and large people who are not defined by culture/race (e.g. Mexicans, Syrian refugees, Muslims), but rather career choices, which is something I'm more comfortable with. Pong Messiah
This is hilarious. Fiorina teams up with Lyin' Ted... immediately gets caught lying. Normally, I'd blame this on Cruz's influence, but Carly Fiorina has a history. I actually enjoyed her rips on Hillary Clinton and her fellow candidates until the PP video incident. It was OK for her to be duped by the video (that's what it was made to do), but the doubling and tripling down in the following days after it became apparent that stock footage was used, that PP wasn't involved in the most damning scenes, etc... was more than a little pathetic. Guest El Chalupacabra
This is hilarious.... Without even reading the meme there, I still just want to punch Ted Cruz repeatedly in the throat and face. If I knew absolutely nothing about him, I would still want to punch him. His face is so punch-able. I haven't had such a negative reaction to anyone in the public spotlight based simply on a picture of them, since, well, I don't know when!
