Body shamers suck. No doubt about that. But its not just "got old" either its also "eats too much and doesn't work out". I " got old" too. And Doc told me I was gonna die if I didn't lower my blood pressure. So I cut my eating way down and busted my ass working out every single day. Since July I've lost 40 pounds. It's hard as hell when you're older but it can be done.

If she doesn't wanna put in the pain, discomfort, and work to lose weight ... Great. I mean that. It's her choice and I respect that. But I'm getting sick of the "got old" magic wand excusing everything. There is choice involved here too.

That's what happens when you drink a lot of whiskey, smoke loads of ciggies and shovel cocaine up your nose for two decades.

But Ms Fischer has a point. No one criticises Harrison ford for having a saggy jaw line and a slight old man gut. For her to be singled out and made a pariah over the impact of her lifestyle choices, that do not fit the Hollywood status quo of feminine body image, is a little rich. Especially since she isn't fat for her age. Or particularly haggard at all IMO. Ultimately I'm of the opinion, who gives a shit? Yet we love to poke at people's vulnerabilities.

And for all we know, maybe Fisher's past few decades were a cakewalk compared to Leia's. Maybe losing Ben and separating from Han sent her retreating into a long, devastating addiction to the worst kind of spice that took a toll that required years of hard recovery. Even former space princesses can have trials and tribulations to overcome.

So many nitpickers have zero imagination.

Ford has stayed in the public eye. There were no surprises there. The other two didn't, and there were plenty of comments about Luke being fat when he first was announced and people saw him.

I mean, hell, has anyone who isn't obsessed with Star Wars seen her since When Harry Met Sally?

I believe a lot of it has to do with the way you started your post. Had she not wrecked herself with the "whiskey, smoke loads of ciggies and shovel cocaine up your nose for two decades" a lot of the negativity wouldn't be there. Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill got old. She got wrecked. When I see her, especially in person at the conventions the whole cast did in the run up to TFA, I can't help but see her lifestyle choices all over her face, voice, etc. It has nothing to do with being fat or not looking like a supermodel. Fisher once said in an interview that the only person who can relate to the life she's had is Jaime Lee Curtis. Well, Curtis just finished up season one of Scream Queens and boy did she look old. Since she's not an actress that appears in a lot of things, I wasn't used to her age. In my mind Curtis was still the woman I saw in Halloween and True Lies. So to me she looked considerably older in this new show. But she still looked and sounded like Jamie Lee Curtis. Wrinkled up, silver-haired and all. But it's still her.

She did have a great appearance on 30 Rock.

Jamie Lee was hot as hell in Scream Queens and I'll fight anyone who says otherwise TO THE GROUND.

The only thing about Carrie's comments that bug me is that before hand she said was excited to have a studio paid trainer and the forced excuse to get in shape.

I feel bad for Carrie Fisher but the truth is that she was never good enough to bitch about having to be thin to get work. If she was any good she would've had a career after Star Wars.

Nobody forced her into that metal bikini. She cashed her paycheck just like the rest of us.

To her credit, along with "getting old," she said looking good (trim, healthy) was also work, not just genetics, so she covered all the bases, I think?

People commenting about a woman who is nearly 60 not being sexy enough for their movie really need to stfu though. I mean, if she was, like, a space escort or space lingerie model or space porn star, fine, say it "didn't work" for you. But last I checked, it wasn't in a space general's jerb to be visually stimulating. Also ADMIRAL ACKBAR HASNT AGED WELL AND OBVIOUSLY HAD WORK DONE AND NOBODY IS COMMENTING ABOUT THAT AM I RIGHT?

Nah she deserves it. She's a hacktress who's only there because she couldn't be recast.

If she were Merl Streep nobody would nitpick. Watching her in TFA was like watching an old druggie whore try to say something meaningful.

I'm not saying she's a great actress, but have you been on the Internets? I guarantee you people would nitpick Streep if she showed up years after her last role and had *gasp* aged and stuff. Maybe they'd be complimentary toward her performance, but her appearance would be commented on, guaranteed.

BTW, it might be somewhat forgotten, but Mark Hamill got some flack for looking different and getting Aunt Beru's haircut for Return of the Jedi. There's even been a longstanding myth that it was due to a car accident Hamill got into that took place before the original Star Wars was even released in theaters where he was allegedly disfigured and required facial reconstruction and all such nonsense. Complete with explaining that the Wampa scene was made to cover his any changes and that it somehow fell apart five years later for the filming of Return of the Jedi.

So it's not like Carrie Fisher would be the first Star Wars actor who has suffered through fans talking about their looks.

Dude.

Male entertainers receive scrutiny and comments about their looks (stage and film are visual mediums, after all), but not to the same level or nasty intensity as female entertainers. Not really equivalent.

Some people commenting on Luke's appearance changing between films isn't the same thing.
