Canada goes red

And in the other election campaign we've all been following with bated breath:

Justin Trudeau's Liberals won a decisive majority government, capturing 184 seats. The Conservatives, who were seeking their fourth consecutive mandate, will now form the Official Opposition.

The Liberals, who began the campaign back in August with a mere 37 seats and trailing in the polls, somehow surged in the last days of the campaign, to end up with 184 seats. It takes 170 to form the government. The ruling Conservatives and the New Democratic Party lead opposition saw their representation decimated. Stephen Harper, whose ten years as PM were dogged by controversy and deeply polarized public opinion, resigned as party leader.

If it's any help, Harper was a mix of Canada's Bush, and Donald Trump. Justin Trudeau, son of former prime minister Pierre Trudeau, is a hopey-changey sort of fellow who's apparently quite popular with the ladies. The socialist New Democrats were led by a chap named Tom Mulcair, comparable to Bernie Sanders, though it was hard to tell as the campaign wore on. Usually far left, the NDP moved center, and seemed to be right of the Liberals for most of it.

As far as I'm concerned, it's hawkish corporate cronies out, SJWs in. Not sure how enthusiastic I am overall. I'm not sad to see Harper go, and I'm not enthused to see Trudeau II take the iron throne, at least for the next 4 years or so.

dont know much of anything about trudeau other than he is pro pipeline and has promised quotas for women in a liberal cabinet or something and his dad was a singer in the monkees

from what little ive seen he seems more like a celebrity ie kind of vapid than a real administrator or leader but that is probably all you need if up against harper and the conservative party right now

in other words the smart people are all saying he might not be any good but at least he couldnt possibly be any worse than the alternative

ofc the canadians who are posting about how they are finally proud to be canadian again are making me want to barf but whatever i shouldnt let the emotional dumbs bother me

The election was a referendum on Harper, who was kind of a polarizing figure here. We're trying very hard to imitate America's preoccupation with the left vs right spectrum. We've lost the right to think ourselves smarter than the Americans. None the less, he lost said referendum by a healthy margin. Serves him right for having a lego man haircut. Whether Trudeau II will be any better, I don't know.

Deja vu? "Hope and Change" or "Yes we Can!" anyone?

I'm getting that, and I'm also getting posts about how Canada's doomed and it's time for the western provinces to separate again. Then again, I live in Alberta, so it's to be expected.

Canada's weird. I dated a guy from Edmonton and he's still my friend on FB and he's was shocked some dude named Wyatt Scott only get 911 votes. That guy killed a robot and rode a goose!

Texas is weird! So much so that "Texas" has become a byword for "Crazy" in Norway.
