Lucasfilm announced today that their first film in the new standalone Star Warsstories series, Rogue One, has begun principal photography. Gareth Edwards (Godzilla, Monsters) is directing Rogue One, which tells the story of resistance fighters who have united to steal plans to the dreaded Death Star. The film is produced by Kathleen Kennedy and is slated for a December 16, 2016 release.

Rogue One takes place before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope and will be a departure from the saga films but have elements that are familiar to the Star Wars universe,” says Kathleen Kennedy. “It goes into new territory, exploring the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective while maintaining that essential Star Wars feel that fans have come to know. Gareth is such an innovative director and I’m so excited to be working with him and the extraordinary ensemble cast he’s selected for ‘Rogue One.’”

Veteran ILM visual effects supervisor John Knoll, who shares a long history with the Star Wars movies, dating back to the mid-1990s, originated the idea for the movie. Allison Shearmur (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Cinderella), John Knoll, Simon Emanuel (The Dark Knight Rises, Fast & Furious 6) and Jason McGatlin (Tintin, War of the Worlds) are executive producers. Kiri Hart and John Swartz (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) are co-producers.

To create the lived-in, realistic feel of Rogue One, Edwards chose Greig Fraser (Zero Dark Thirty, Foxcatcher) to be his director of photography and Neil Corbould (Black Hawk Down, Gladiator, Saving Private Ryan) to be his special effects supervisor. Star Wars and Lucasfilm veteran Doug Chiang (Star Wars: Episodes I-II, Forrest Gump) and Neil Lamont (supervising art director for theHarry Potter series, Edge of Tomorrow) will be the production designers. Additional crew members will include stunt coordinator Rob Inch (World War Z,Marvel’s Captain America: The First Avenger), creature effects supervisor Neal Scanlan (Prometheus) and co-costume designers Dave Crossman (costume supervisor for the Harry Potter series, Saving Private Ryan) and Glyn Dillon (costume concept artist for Kingsman: The Secret Service, Jupiter Ascending).

I know it's only the first photo and 5 cast members, but I hope there are some alien cast members. I always saw the Imperials as being human only and the rebels being a mix of alien and human. But that's not a serious complaint because I'm really looking forward to this, a little more than Awakens actually

I was saying he could be either/or. He is an odd looking dude that could pull either off.

To me, given how they are presented as space Nazis it makes sense they are anti alien. But I wouldn't lose my crap if they did so.

That said I am shocked no one has implied he is Thrawn.

What's a Thrawn?

The no alien thing was EU (High Human Culture, I believe), but pretty obvious from just watching the films. How many alien Imperial officers did we see?

My first thought was that Tudyk would be a mo-cap character, since he did that in I, Robot. He does a pretty good English accent, though, so he could be an Imperial officer. Maybe a mo-cap alien Imperial officer, just to throw everyone for a loop. Or maybe he's just a pilot who gets killed in the middle of his catchphrase.

Even if aliens are in the Empire now it wouldn't contradict the films in my mind because Palpy was probably the racist.

While the humans-only thing certainly made sense, up until Zahn pointed it out, I had always thought The Emperor was an alien. Early Jedi concept art seemed to imply he was, and the yellow eyes seemed to re-enfore it.

Obviously, the PT made it clear he is not. But at the time..

Also, and I the only one wondering if maybe Biggs has been recast to be in this? Wouldn't that be fun?

I'm not sure how including Biggs would work. He only visited Luke a few days before meeting him again on Yavin.

Well, wait. What's deleted scene canonicity? Otherwise, Biggs adventuring could work by Luke's dinner scene dialogue. Maybe include Tank as his partner in crime.

It would seem kinda odd if Biggs steals the plans, hands them off to Leia, then goes home for a quick vacation, and Leia drops the plans on the same planet.

I mean, crazier coincidences have happened in Star Wars.

Biggs also just finished Academy and was about to go find the Alliance... But it was a cut scene so it may no longer be canon.
