Pong Messiah
When word of this scandal broke, I considered it a non-issue, cause why wouldn't you want to save the organs from a dead fetus and put them to good use? I can't believe people are still going on about this. If you are going to perform abortions, why not advance medical research while making some money? Seems like a win-win. If you are worried that the additional profit derived from baby parts is going to make people "push" pregnant women into getting abortions... eh, if somebody unsure enough about having a baby that they can be easily talked into an abortion, chances are they aren't ready for a baby anyway. Abortion providers are doing the world a favor. And if you are against abortion, why care? It's not like the fetus is any less dead if you don't use its organs. I'm sure it still goes to heaven. Ms. Spam
Texas. That's my answer to this being a big deal. Greg Abbott is an idiot. I personally don't care. If it advances medical research or care even better.

Destiny Skywalker
I'm probably one of the few anti-abortion people around here. I really don't have an issue with using those fetuses for medical research, at least some good is going to come of it. But selling it for profit does bother me, especially if they are accepting federal funds to provide that service.
Ms. Spam
That is my biggest quibble, Destiny. I think if they were making some profit on this it would be wrong.

OK, but could you elaborate? You are the only person on this site I'm afraid of, so you can be sure I won't be snarky or trollish in response. Destiny Skywalker
Afraid of me? Seriously? Planned Parenthood accepts federal funds to provide free or reduced-price medical care to the underprivileged community, to put it in the most PC terms (aka THEM POORS). PPFA claims to be a non-profit. So they accept federal funds to provide that care. How, then, can they justify selling organs and tissue for profit? I would think that there are plenty of legitimate organizations that would happily accept tissue donations for research purposes. (And then PPFA would save on waste removal services.) Also, I'm pretty sure if you put a body part up for sale on Craigslist, the police would investigate. I'm pretty sure that's illegal. I'm currently going through the process of donating frozen breast milk because my son no longer needs it (more like he just spills it all over the place), and I know there are many babies out there who could use it. Some of the supposed "milk banks" out there actually just sell the milk for a profit. I made sure I'm not donating to one of them, even if it means having to ship it instead of dropping it off at the nearest place. I want to make sure it goes towards a good use instead of lining someone's pockets. Same reason I prefer to donate to Salvation Army instead of Goodwill. I would think that there are plenty of legitimate organizations that would happily accept tissue donations for research purposes. (And then PPFA would save on waste removal services.) I think it can be justified cause you don't have to just give everything away to retain your non-profit status. On a theoretical level, I don't think any non-profit should be receiving federal funds, so I have a problem with Planned Parenthood in that regard. But this isn't a perfect world, so on a practical level, they might as well accept the funds if they are there... and if the rules let ya sell fetal organs for research, well... I guess I just don't see how they'd need to justify it?

Guest El Chalupacabra
Great. Yet another abortion-related topic being kicked off at the edge of an election year to stir up the crazies on both sides of the argument. Yawn. Can I go back to sleep now? Ms. Spam
You know, on one hand I see Destiny's point, and when I'm rationally thinking about this it is the way I lean. But then I think "Hey! You're discarding your own fetus. One mans garbage is another mans riches". Kind of like the rat people of India. So if you don't want baby parts going to be sold just keep those legs closed ladies. Really the objectionable way that was stated is that doctors were encouraged to not "crush" certain parts of the fetus during the abortion procedure was probably the biggest issue creator about this whole thing. RelentlessMalice
Okay??? Most of the political ideology tests I have taken show me to be moderate leaning slightly right. Honestly I think a study should be done where test subjects have to answer the same political ideology questions each day depending on mood changes. I know my political ideology can change depending on if I am happy, mad, sad,or just dont give a shit.
Odine
"Rat people of India"?? Say what now? I'm confused as to what you could actually harvest from an aborted foetus. I mean.. They're tiny.. So what.. You harvest organs then let them grow to full size on an agar plate or something? Also I though abortions usually involve the foetus being sucked out through a tube. For some reason I always thought the consistency would be more... "paste-like" than an actual intact little foetus who's organs are intact and ripe for removal. Ethically I don't have a problem with it I'm just tying to get my head around the mechanics. Crazy.

RelentlessMalice
I am going to save myself some time here and just stand by my comment and no elaborate about it. I will let you guys jump to all your conclusions. Open heart surgery and skin grafing is not in the same realm of this topic if the story behind it is true. That is still up in the air. The Human Torch
I don't know enough about the issue to comment, but I am an American so here I go; Donor status is elective for adults for their own bodies, I believe guardians of children too. Perhaps the mother of the fetus should be required to check yes or no for donor status. If one argues her body her decision then this continues that line of thought. If one argues it's a human life, then unless the abortion was a medical emergency those people would likely see no reason to support any post-mortem procedure, but since abortion is legal all this side could do legally is protest or debate thru the appropriate avenues which has no real bearing on procedures being done in the meantime. The 'For Profit' aspect could be troubling for both sides of the abortion issue because humanity has a terrible side when presented with money. If a woman doesn't see the fetus as a human then one could argue that with profit now attached to abortion she could enter into an 'argeement' to continually be a donor. Of course this is a nightmare scenario the likes of which previously only existed in sci-fi, but there ya go it's essentially now a possible scenario. RM, I've taken those political quizes too. I was concluded to be a socialist libertarian, which at first made me think I was a living oxymoron and then I was like dude I don't even smoke pot how can I be a libertarian?! Then I got distracted by the TV so I forgot about analyzing the tag.
Odine
I'm pretty sure the whole thing is made up anyways.. I told a co worker about it and he said something about a religious group making a film about abortion clinics and how they do these things but basically is all made up. Not that I have any proof of this but some dude none of you know that I work with thinks it's all BS.

The subsist on rats.Sick that sounds interesting. I saw a documentary about a community in that part of the world who's entire economy and way of life survives on stripping container vessels and ships that go to their shores to die. We just park them up and they strip them, and build their houses out of the materiels.

RelentlessMalice
Once again you missed my point MG. Macabre and sick= taking aborted fetuses and using it to make a profit, which means once making money is involved there is a higher chance for an increase in abortions to make $$$. Do you understand that now?
DANA-kin Skywalker
Black market fetus danger. I always wanted one myself. Malices concern is (i believe) that if there is money to be made, it might open up an opportunity for profiteering, which would be criminal and dangerous. And really fucked up.
