The major problem (early on) for me being the question of why am I supposed to care about Matt Damon's character.

 

I think making the lead character's family a part of the story would have gone a long way toward remedying this. I think there should been some scenes with Matt Damon's character's parents, and I'm surprised this wasn't done. We pretty much saw the whole world's reaction to the character being stranded on another planet and his eventual rescue, but never saw how it impacted the people closest to him. It's safe to assume he didn't have a wife or kids, as they were never mentioned. But their presence would have given the movie more emotional depth. Its the one thing I felt was missing from the story. Other than that, I thought it was great film.
