They started uysing it instead of cane sugar in the mid 80s because of the corn subsidies. It's a little complicated and lengthy, but easily Googled for a full explanation. Thing is HFCS was available as a cost-effective sweetener as far back as the 50s but there was some controversy over the chemial process in the human body (probably using that chemical process thing wrong, but you get the gist?) that makes this crap TOXIC to humans. I'm still not convinced the stuff is safe for cunsumption.If it were really toxic, then people would be dead from consuming it.
