Teen Forced to Undergo Chemo

I've had some issues. Mostly because I went from awesome health coverage to bare bones coverage. Insurance got a lot more complicated and there was this weird thing where I had to choose between some kinda of maternity coverage (??!?) or paying a fine on my taxes. Did the math and the fine was lower, so I didn't get it. I'm not sure how that's gonna work out.

Not happy with Obamacare. It doesn't give me totalitarian nightmares, it just makes me wish we could move on to single payer already. But maybe that's what it's supposed to do.

Yeah Obamacare isn't the best solution, but it is a step in the right direction. People say they're okay with universal coverage-- but then complain about premiums going up. It's like complaining about paying taxes while enjoying a pothole-less highway.

Medical insurance sucks on the whole, regardless of the system, it has for ages-- we just now are getting stuck since the money is coming from a different place. But it will balance out eventually.

Well I guess you guys have been lucky enough not to get sick or have any hospital visits lately because I have in my family and the amount of bueracratic red tape involved between a patient and their doctor sucks! Not to mention because of my healthcare through my employer changed because of Obamacare and my deductible ****ing went up.

RM, this doesn't happen in countries with single payer systems. Talk to a Briton or a Canadian. The only problem with them can be wait times to see specialists. They're no panacea, like I said, and many successful systems in the world are mixes of private and public. But this knee jerk reaction against any government involvement in health care delivery puzzles me. Are you really so well serviced by health insurance conglomerates that the scare tactics their astroturf lobby groups employ are credible?

My health insurance has changed literally not one bit. Not price, not coverage, not treatment.

Same here, but only because I have a union contract through 2016, and my employer is now paying a fine for giving me good coverage and they're pissed about it.

My husband's coverage got worse to avoid the fine, and my mom's plan was "no longer offered in the area" (new way they drop you), and she had to sign up for a higher deductible, higher out of pocket percentage at a higher cost. This system blows. But I've already bitched about this several times.

What I wanted Obamacare to fix:

  • Make it so when I am scheduled for an appointment to see the doctor I will see the doctor at said time. Fines for doctors with crappy schedulers.
  • Make it so the cost of something is universally the same. I spent some time recently for a medical issue as an outpatient in one hospital and the cost of some meds administered were 50$ more than if I went to another hospital further away. Meds should not be like gas pricing for the same gas in the underground tank. I mean it is the same damn pill.
  • More oversight on medications perscribed and pricing for meds. I really feel like this stuff is all just a scam to make me part with more of my money.

High deductible plans like the one that Destiny's Mom was forced into is just ridiculous. I looked into it when open enrollment came around but really I would just have money taken out of my paycheck for no good reason. This year I may get close enough to go over the standard deduction and not file a 1040EZ but actually do the one where you do line item deductions because of some medical expenses I get to write off but previously I've never spent the minimum amount of the deductible you'd have to spend for that plan. I live really frugally. Not because I have to but because I want to retire and enjoy my retirement. I don't think health insurers should get my money for such crappy care.

The whole not being able to bill for multiple things in one visit has been a practice of insurance companies for decades. Very few have allowed it and they've been wanting to get rid of those plans forever. So that one isn't the fault of Obamacare, but insurance companies.

But I can see how people without a background in insurance would assume all changes are Obamacare related.

Kurgan the government has no business telling anyone they have to have healthcare. It is nothing more than "implied power abuse" by the legislative and executive branch that should be deamed unconstitutional by the judicial branch one day.

Then by your logic hospitals should be allowed to kick any uninsured to the curb and deny treatment unless they pay up front. Fair is fair.

My workplace coverage didn't seem to change benefits at all and the price came down (slightly). I know that the difference between last benefit year and 2015 was that they consolidated coverage into two health plans and nixed the cadillac plan that only company executives could begin to afford. So it might be this consolidation is what saved the money more than Obamacare. Regardless, it's not great insurance and never has been-- moderately high deductible ($2,500), high out of pocket max ($4500), and high office copays ($30, $50, $60 depending), and $15 copays for older prescriptions but a whole lot of excluded drugs with zero coverage.
