Mitth'raw'nuroudo
It's ****ing better than Red Dragon. I'll never hear Strong As I Am again without thinking of this movie. The Peterson era of CSI is forever changed for me. Aside from that, I really don't know what to say, mann.
Mitth'raw'nuroudo
You mean y'all haven't seen this? Fo' shame, crackas. Fo' shame.
Ryn
I saw it. Definitely locked in as an 80's-era movie unfortunately.
Ryn
To add: I fear Cox's Lector more than Hopkins'. Hopkins brought a great psychological terror to the role, but I found Cox to convey actually committing these acts.
ShadowDog
I couldn't get through it. Very 80s.
Pong Messiah
Ryn and Shadowdog are right, unfortunately. 80's movies shine when it comes to whimsy, light comedy, and crowd-pleasingly brainless action/adventure. While there are exceptions, anything beyond that tends to come off as vapid -- self-conscious paint-spatter over dull square-jawed symmetry. Feel sorry for it, but don't take it seriously as art. Sadly, a 1980s psychological thriller has to be masterful to the point transcendence to rise above the stylings of its era. Manhunter, while a good flick, does not succeed. I honestly prefer Red Dragon, while admitting it is a lesser film, simply because I don't find watching it to be as jarring an experience.
Mitth'raw'nuroudo
And Chopping Mall is just soooo timeless.
Pong Messiah
Nope, it is bad and incredibly dated. But in the case of Chopping Mall, it is part of the film's charm; the 1980s work in that movie's favor. In the case of Manhunter, it is one of the things that prevents me from being able to get into it.
Guest El Chalupacabra
I like both movies but Red dragon > Manhunter all the way. Michael Mann's film technique, most famous for Miami vice, is about as dated as Sonny Crocket's suits, pastel t-shirts, and loafers.
Ryn
I'd say there was more of a lingering influence from Crime Story rather than Miami Vice.
