I watched part of the movie this evening. Had to stop it at the necro-sex scene because I was viewing with company (I mean what sick f*** wrote this, right? No offense intended, Tank...I had to say that out loud as I turned it off in front of said company, so I didn't look like a sick f*** myself  ).

Decidedly skews more like a gory/shock horror flick, than a frightening one. A little too gory and graphic for my taste, to be honest, but I will try to finish the rest of it alone. Teen age or twenty something me would probably be all over it, but I'm 40 something now, so my tastes have changed. The story was definitely was not what I was expecting. Not a criticism, and I am not sure why I had this misconception, but I expected more of a loose and fictionalized account of Ed Gein's childhood with more psychodrama and less gore.

To me, what I have seen thus far reminded me of a cross between Hostel (the gore), Natural Born Killers (maybe because of the diner robbery scene?), the Hills Have Eyes (Rural types being T totally Effed up, almost to a character), and in an odd way, Goonies...or maybe anti-Goonies if they came from Hell. LOL! Took me a while to figure out the sheriff was the same guy who played Deacon Frost from Blade 1. So far, seems pretty faithful to the original, or more properly, doesn't seem to contradict it. I get the sense that this might have (and could still be I suppose) been laying the groundwork for a sequel that effectively remakes the original TCM. I guess it remains to be seen if that happens?

The positives: definitely better so far than the TCM remake which was so-so, and its prequel which was gawd awful. I like that Leatherface is set in the 50s and 60s and the attention to detail of the cars, props, and sets (haven't spotted any anachronisms yet). It does seem totally believable to be set in Texas, which surprises me because I had understood that this was filmed in Eastern Europe?

This is the part that all my family is WTF'ing me about. That wasn't me-- that was totally the directors.

I'm 43....

Honestly, this is my biggest problem too. The studio wanted it to be full of jump scares so they did reshoots and recut the thing and removed a lot of the smaller character scenes I wrote. That's the main reason I don't like this cut. The director's cut was still gory, but there was more story and less things jumping out at you.

This is what everyone was expecting it to be-- and this is what I correctly figured on everyone else pitching. I think I got the job because I went left field with it.

Hostel-- no, I don't love torture porn. I am cool with gore, but the directors owned that aspect. Natural Born Killers-- 100% an inspiration. Straight up ripped off the diner scene.

I wrote it dovetailing to the original. There wasn't much talk about what else we'd do. I personally was ready to pitch either a Clarice spin off or go further back to Grandpa as a young man.

I wrote directly to the original, with a few nods to Chainsaw 3D because I had to (same producers).

It's moot though because Lion's Gate sat on it so long, the producers lost the rights. The next person to nab them could totally do their own thing-- which to be honest, is kind of par for the course for TCM. None of them really line up with each other outside of our take, and the remake with its prequel.

Shot in Bulgaria, with British actors and French directors taking placer in 1960s Texas.... (there was a lot of ADR)!

I hope I did not come off as critical, because that was not my intent, Tank. To have a movie made from something you wrote is definitely an accomplishment, and I congratulate you. I do see what you were doing with the writing. It must be frustrating to write something, and then have someone else come after and change how you originally envisioned things. As always, your "behind the scenes" perspective on how movies are made, is always interesting.

Even though I haven't been a fan of TCM movies for a long time I really look forward to seeing this. I was at a video store and saw it on the shelf and immediately told my girlfriend "I know the guy who wrote this......sort of". Then I had to explain Nightly and she laughed at me for being a dumbass, etc.

Hope this opens some doors for you, Tank. Like many I've sat around with friends and shared ideas about what I would do if I was a screenwriter, but you're actually doing it. That's awesome.

Don't let those fuckers get you down. I think I speak for all of Nightly when I say that we're behind you.

And no, I'm not sucking up for a cameo role, but if I do get one feel free to kill me in the most gruesome way you can think of.

The good news is-- it opened tons of doors. I actually wrote it almost 4 years ago at this point, and the it wasn't my first Hollywood job, but it was my first big one. The studio immediately sent me to London to try and fix London Has Fallen. I came back and did a book adaption for them.

I've since worked on 2 more studio films, pitched a TV show with Gale Anne Hurd, and did a season in the writer's room of a new Hulu show. So even though the movie is kinda poopy, I've been working solid as a writer for almost four years now as a result of the first draft.

I just wish one of the other things would come out. It seems to take forever.

But thank you for the kind words!

If I'm ever in a position to cast, I'll totally throw you in a meat grinder.

You are working with Gale Anne Hurd? DUDE! That is so awesome for you! Wasn't Terminator 1 one of your favorite movies when you were younger? That has to be a dream come true for you! Is this new show something to do with TWD....that is, if you are allowed to say?

It was a dream come true. It was a new original horror show. Universal bought it, but ultimately we couldn't find a home for it with a Network or content service. It wasn't for lack of people liking it-- but if they have something remotely similar, or it doesn't fit their bigger brand, if they can't counter-program it effectively, if it;s too risque for advertisers, if they can't fit it into their brand-- they will pass. Netflix loved it, but passed because one element was similar to something in another show that was completely different.

It's a bummer, but meeting all the networks with her on my side did wonders for my career and led to more work, and Gale's company hired me to rewrite a movie for them, and they may use me on one of their upcoming shows on staff. It's a very fluid world full of 85% rejection, but at this stage I'm being told no by high up people and the fact I'm even being considered is great. It's a long game, like any other business.

Most writers have to slog their way up. The auteurs and wunderkinds really are the exception. Most writers I know slogged for years. Technically I've been at it for 12, and only been doing it as my primary income source for the last 3-4.

I havent seen this yet. A few times I thought about it, but I have a lot of trouble with gore and so I wimped out. Back when BONES was on TV Id look away during the discovery moments. My palette cleanser function doesnt seem to work as well as other people, stuff stays up in there. I have been reading stuff about the film though. I feel for you, Tank. But, at least you did it and got paid. Bright side! XD

Son: Uhh... Does he get royalties if I purchase it?

Me: Uhh... who purchase whaaaaaaaaaaat????!?!?!!?!????!

Son: Margarita night, Dad?

Me: Yes, but who what when where?

Son: Oh. I just noticed I didnt send the photos. Leatherface. Does he get royalties if I purchase it? I bought it.

Me: Maybe. I dunno. Prooooooooooobly? Tank was able to buy a house because of it, so yay! Not because of your purchase of the DVD though of course. That said, he was annoyed with changes made during film. They put in a lot of hack hack blood scare and removed character pits.

Me: Bits. Im sure that no armpits were harmed in the filming of this film.

Son: Still awesome he wrote a film.

Me: True.
