Today was Noah's first science fair. He made a model of a tornado, and learned even more about them than he already knew (which was considerable). His project won Grand Champion for his age group (K-2), and Noah was awarded Best Interview as well. We're so proud! We're raising a geeky little nerd. I love it.

His tornado model. He actually did 90% of this himself. I glued the "grass" onto the board, and Trevor rigged the tornado to stand, but that's it. Noah did all the rest. We helped him come up with ideas for what to put on there, but then he narrowed it down to the ones he wanted.

It depends on the science fair. This one is with the homeschool association we're members of. They allowed the younger grades to make a model/do a demonstration, conduct an experiment, or present a scientific collection. The point is to get young children to learn and think about scientific concepts. He says that next year he wants to do an earthquake demonstration, but I think I'm going to convince him to do an experiment.

That's awesome! I judge science fairs every now and then, sometimes I am blown away by how bad some of the judges can be. Some of the kids obviously put a lot of work into it, and they deserve to be treated more fairly than they are. The last fair I judged, it was clear there was some female vs. female bias, i.e. the female judge resented the female student.
