Ms. Spam
I'd argue that the Civil War just hurried the South's demise into economic ruin. There was a lot of topics about how the economics of the War were either to help or would hinder either the Union of the Confederacy thrown around during my college days. The Union was looking good as they had better transport options, and better modern industry as well as capitals of money power. The south had old style crops that had to be imported to be made into something that is cotton and limited transportation routes to get them there as well as underdeveloped infrastructure.
