Rather than focusing on where we've missed opportunities in the past, I propose that we attempt to improve Nightly going forward. I've been discussing it with Pong, and here are some of my thoughts:

General conversation isn't a draw for anyone. We need more specific boards: this past year, and even before, we could have gone for a Batman board, there's more than enough content to create a board. Now we should do that with the Avengers. We're sitting at 6 movies right now, with comics, TV shows and video games galore to discuss that are all connected. And we could benefit from having our dedicated users be more content creation oriented: forum moderators would work more closely with individuals to create content. For example, ShadowDog has run lots of create contests and has had some great ideas for debate type threads, but specifically having users who are working at digging up Iron Man 3 spoilers, things of that nature.

We should be doing the same thing for video games. It seems like every time I go in there, the only active thread is the "What Game Are You Playing" thread, which doesn't make any sense to me. We should be discussing games, working on content related to them, like discussion, debate, "Rotten Eggs" style threads, hints, whatever.

We should create a board that's just for sharing funny pics/videos/whatever, either user-created or not. We should also have a food/craft board that allows people to do Pinterest type sharing in a message board environment.

In doing so, we should also take stock of our current layout. We should, as a community, look at what's working and what isn't, what we should condense and what we should expand. We need to cut some dead weight, shift things around, and maybe even look outside the box and work at developing new, active leadership.

Can we also have a Troll Free Lyceum?

You know where the typical responses aren't

1. OMG they are so stupid for thinking this way.
2. OMG I went to this other place where people are posting the same thing. They are so stupid and a bunch of idiots.
3. Hey everybody! Look at this past thread where I have already told you you were a bunch of idiots and why my line of thought is superior. And look at this one, I think I'm smart there too.

Is anyone willing to do any recaps of any tv shows? What things do we like that can also be a draw for others?

I'm really liking the focus on user involvement. I think that is the key to keeping old-timers and attracting new users.

One quandary I'm having reading this, though, is how we can avoid becoming a "general discussion" board, with such a diverse array of topics.

The only message boards I have seen that aren't bleeding out users are the ones with a very clear -- and limited -- array of topics, and a subject that is both historical, but also with a changing backdrop that keeps discussion moving along. Gaming. Politics. Guitar Gear. Sports. Movies. I wonder what the unifying force could be here... just nerdery in general? What would it be?

Sorry, but there is always going to be some level of this where politics/philosophy/etc. are hashed out. For a lot of people it's more about scoring points (or simply making the other person look stupid) than it is about learning sharing good ideas. It's where sad and/or socially incompetent people go to feel better about themselves.

I know Amanda rubs you the wrong way. I know I've pissed you off in the past, too (and maybe I'm pissing you off right now? I don't know), but honestly, compared to most of the political forums I've visited, the boats in Nightly's Lyceum are one big, happy fleet. Go spend ten minutes at DU, DA, Politics and Current Affairs, etc. then come back and give me the ggabearhug I deserve.

The AV Club pulls ridiculous page views by doing this, there's a huge market for it.

Don't take it personally, Pong. You can say it can never happen but I've seen it occur plenty of times and with people with differing opinions. It's all a matter of the leadership of the board and people acting like adults. There are ways of stopping the 'scoring points' as you call it, you just don't feel like working to make it happen.

I do think that there's a place for general nerdery, so long as we create specific avenues for it. Plus that is what Nightly has effectively been since the release of RotS, we just haven't ever been willing to completely embrace it and as a result we've turned into something so general that it seems like we're more interested in not offending anyone. In the past our successful boards have operated almost independently of each other, so I don't see why that couldn't be the case now.

I'm sure that Pong would be willing to listen to your ideas on that, GGaB. In general, I do agree that the Lyceum is run pretty well. But for the point of this thread, I'd prefer if we could try to focus on positive change we could make instead of focusing on what we currently dislike.

So:

Current shows that people are watching:

ICY! Do you have free time to writer recaps of Arrow?

Anybody up for Revolution? Last Resort? What else?

I didn't realize this was a Improvement Suggestion Thread but only if I agree'. My bad.

What's wrong with suggesting we have a troll free zone where we can discuss topics? I wasn't meaning to change the current but add another.

Sorry, I'll add a better suggestion. ZOMG guyz let have recaps of X Factor, OMG!

I take everything personally, but I have never said it doesn't happen, even with regularity. And regarding "working" to make it happen, as one of the most active people here, both on the board, and behind the scenes with my forum's "problem users" I resent your accusation. It's really not your business if I tell a user to chill out (often), delete their posts (occasionally), or have them banned (uncommon). I respect people's privacy, even jerks, so you're only going to see me "working" when somebody steps so far out of line that I feel the forum itself should have an explanation or a chance to respond. So excuse me, but you have no idea what I'm working on.

Anyway, if I'm not edit/ban happy enough for your tastes, sorry. But I've done it both ways, and have found that there is no formula that keeps everybody happy. If I were to do things your way, I'd have Monkeygirl and the forum's other three regulars calling me "Nazi" even more than usual, so what to do? Giving people a longer leash on contentious topics has its hazards, but it's the least painful bad way I've found of handling it.

Real GM has huge traffic, and a forum for literally every sports team you could imagine. They do it by catering to people's love of individual teams. Most of the regulars over there don't mix with those from the other forums except to troll teams they don't like or give kudos to non-home teams they do, so there's no real "Cantina" there, but the traffic is insane.

EDIT: sorry, Brando. I'll take this elsewhere if GGAB wants to pursue it.

I do too... so the question is, how does Nightly do it in a way that is unique and draws people in, rather than seeming like a knockoff?

Bodega: Are you willing to do some music reviews?

I have been wanting to do that for awhile, and thought it would seem kinda... I dunno... snobby? But if there is more than one person contributing it could be cool

bodega can write about music in a way that is both entertaining and provocative. I have a friend who does a monthly podcast/magazine, and tons of people follow her because of that combo... IT COULD WORK!

Whoa. Re-read. The very first thing I said was to encourage you to share your ideas for improvement. Please share your ideas, but don't get caught up in who's done what wrong. Blame isn't what we're looking for, solutions are the goal.

A Zombie Apocalypse forum wouldn't be a bad idea. Zombies are big right now, and very geek chic.

danger, you're a great idea man. Any other ideas?

I think that something food/crafty like bodega's sauce thread would be a great way to go. Threads where individuals take a project from beginning to end. Doesn't even have to be "crafty" stuff. It can be fixing simple stuff around the house or similar things. I wouldn't put computer upgrades in that area (although that type of content could be great too!) but all of that stuff would be great.

Interesting thought. Care to share a bit more on it?

I know it's been thrown around before, that condensing is a better way, but so far I think that every time we've combined forums it's had a negative effect on membership. That doesn't mean it's wrong, but I'm also not sure that it's RIGHT.

we all make some home made porn with nightly.net advertised on it with a watermark or scrolling ticker of some sort. upload to various sites (new videos usually get thousands of views within hours) and conversate with the inevitable fans who come. ;)
