The Hangover 2 - B+

Everyone I know said this movie sucked because "it's just like the first one." Well yeah - it's a second movie in a comedy franchise, so what did they expect. Was Hot Shots Part Deux much different than the first one? What about any of the Naked Gun movies? It was exactly what I thought it would be, and even had a few fun surprises. I liked it.

Dark Knight Rises - A+

As usual, Nolan delivered.

We Need To Talk About Kevin (2011) starring Tilda Swinton - A

One of the best horror films of recent memory. Also : the use of Buddy Holly's "Everyday" for a soundtrack choice confirms my long held suspicion that the song is, in fact, a creepy creepfest of creeping creepinitude. Also also : for the sake of accuracy I must mention that the last film I actually saw was The Dark Knight Rises and I give it a C.

I love Swinton! I will have to check that one out, RC.

Hugo - B

It was visually interesting and great storytime fun, but there was something missing... it was almost as if some of the whimsy was forced, rather than occuring naturally. The kids were great, though, and it was a surprise to learn that the innocent bookish girl in this movie was the same actress who played the butt-kicking Hit Girl in Kick Ass. Sasha Baron Cohen was pleasantly tame and I am more willing to give him a chance in the Freddie Mercury biopic...

Super 8 F- - - -

saw netflix added this movie and thought, what the hell, why not? got just a few lines of dialogue into it and aborted the hell out it. each sappy response by the white, worried grandmother was another cliche' stab in the gut after another. i threw up all over myself immediately after turning it off.

The Change Up - B+

Yes, it was another Freaky Friday rip off, but it presented some new elements previously unexplored, such as, is it simple mastubating if you are in your best friend's body while you are doing it? Very funny, if not very original. And both actors did a fine job portraying each other's characters, with a few moments that were golden.

Frankenweenie - A

What a treat of a movie - 3D, stop-motion animation and black & white! Loved the many nods visually to the classic horror films of the past. Great voice work by Martin Landau who seemed to be channelng Bela Lugosi and Vincent Price for the science teacher, but also brought his own thing to the character. Quite a few touching moments too.

Safety Not Guaranteed

C

Roughly executed but ably ended. About two-thirds of the movie's story (anything involving the Jake Johnson character and then the Karan Soni character and their love lives, specifically) should have been ditched. And there's a thing where a guy watching another guy raises his fist in triumph in what I assume is supposed to be an inspiring and life-affirming moment of bro-tudeness but it didn't quite work for me.

THat Abraham Lincoln with zombies movie....C-

The premise is outstanding and I liked the look/feel of the film and the way it wove modern elements to Civil War era things, but it was SO BORING! After the first few scenes of ubiquitous zombie-slaughter, it played like a video game or a porn flick: the "story" and "characters" seemed only there to support frequent, bloody, screeching, lengthy, identical bouts of slaughter-not that that's a bad thing, they just got old. Then after what seemed like dozens of those, I kind of lost what was left of the story line and fell asleep.

And I REALLY WANTED to like it. :(

Bernie, starring Jack Black in the title role and with Richard Linklater directing, is a haunting masterpiece of modern day Americana that scrutinizes our contemporary notions of guilt, community, justice, AND OMG THEY ARE MAKING NEW STAR WARS!!!!!!!!

Bernie was one of my favorite films I've seen so far this year.
