The time for the First Task is nigh!

The First Task: Part 1 Assign an appropriate, clever, or amusing book title to go with the images listed below ... as if the images were the cover art for a book. None of the images below are actual book covers, so your job is to do one of the following:

1) Assign a real book title that fits an image (including author name).

2) Make up an fitting fictional book title and author that fits an image.

Scoring: Each book title will be graded 1 (it sucked) through 10 (brilliant, very appropriate, very amusing, or all three) by each judge. The lowest score from each judge will be dropped, so only your four highest scores for each title will count. Since there are five judges and since only four scores per title will count, you can score a maximum of 200 points for this part of the task.

Example: This image is NOT one of the five you will be judged on, this is an example of how to format your entry.

X: <---this letter identifies the image
Posted Image

If the book title is a real one you would enter this way:

X: "American Pie: My Search for the Perfect Pizza" by Peter Reinhart (real book title)

If the book title is fictional you would enter this way:

X: "My PIES" by Bill "ShadowDog" Clinton (fictional book title)

PS. If anything is still confusing, feel free to PM me or ask a question in the feedback thread.

The First Task: Part 2 Name that book! Guess the novel in question using the fewest possible clues. The first two clues are provided here. You can then PM me a guess. Each wrong answer subtracts 5 points from your score and gets you another clue.

Scoring: You start with 50 points, so it will take 10 wrong guesses (and 12 total clues) to wipe out your kitty. The last couple clues are gimmies, so no one should walk away from this with zero points.

Your first two clues:

1) This novel was first published in the 1970s but it wasn't until 1980 that a movie based on it was filmed.

2) Though this was not the author's first published work, this novel launched a very successful career for the author, a career that continues to this day.

Task Prize: The person who finishes the first task with the highest point total will receive $15 in Nightly swag OR a free ShadowDog DVD gift pack ("Desdemona" and "Guerilla!"). This is a task specific award that is not related to overall contest winner. In the unlikely event of a tie, the fifth (dropped) score will be used to break the tie. If there is still a tie, the prize for this task will be divided between all tying members.

Time Limit: You have until Midnight EST of Monday, December 18. The judges will then have the next 24 hours to grade all the entries.

Entering your submissions: PM me your Part 1 submissions so that I can blindly provide them to the judges (they won't know who wrote what), taking care to match the correct title with the correct image. You can enter the titles PIEcemeal (1 now, 1 two hours from now, and so on) and indicating whether your title is real or fictional. In order to not give free clues to other contestants, PM your Part 2 guesses. You can PM everything at once or a little at a time, it's your call.

Changing your entry: Your entry is not set in stone until the time limit has expired. Feel free to change your mind as often as you like.

Overall Score: You can earn a maximum of 250 points for this task.

This thread will now be locked again until your entries have been JUDGED and scored. :P

Awesome.

It seems to me that the titles for D were the most random and disjointed.

I agree but that is my all time favorite political cartoon. I have no freaking clue what it is supposed to mean but everything about it, including the expression on the angel's face, makes me laugh.

We'll know when the scores come out.

Which will be soon. Four out of five judges are done.

The scores are all in!

NOTE: To prevent any judge bashing, I've scrambled the order of the scores for each submission. So the first score each time was NOT done by the same person, and so on. They are so scrambled that even I don't know who gave what score for what submission. (though I do have their original PMs if a question arose and I really needed to find out)

Which means that GypsyRose has won the prize for this task. Don't forget, however, that the overall championship will be determined by your cumulative score. Even the furthest people back have a chance to win this thing if they max out their points in the second and final task. Don't forget that Winchie was way back in the standings at this point last time and no one gave him a chance to win. There will also be a Second Task winner for whoever scores the most in that round (which will be aside from the overall winner). So don't despair if you're lower on the standings, this is still wide open.

Standings:
1) GypsyRose 221
2) Kung Fu Jawa 215
3) Darth Yossarian 213
4) Darth Virul 209
5) UK Legend Killa 208
6) LadyGuinevere 206
7) JRB88 204
8) Copper 200
9) Green Light Baby 199
10) Lost in Coruscant 193
11) Richcelt 192
12) bonnie13 179
13) eye_of_the_wolf 174

One final note. Because I was sporadic getting back to UK and Bonnie on their Part 2 guesses, I'm giving you both one final guess that can earn you the remaining points and help your overall score. If you do have a final guess, get it to me ASAP and I'll update your score. In neither case would this affect the winner, which is why Gyps has been awarded. But if could put you in position for a run in Task 2.

Task 2 begins tomorrow and will have a more relaxed timing so that everyone can get it in during these busy holidays.

Congrats to all.

A special thank you to Bob Woodward's "State of Denial: Bush at War, Part III" and Mitch Albom's "The Five People You Meet in Heaven" and for me being old enough to watch Diana's and Charles' wedding where she messed up his name for the D caption and to the romance writer Sandra Hill that mentioned the author in the second part. Gotta love those time-traveling Viking Navy SEALs. BWahahahahhaha

It was well worth being almost late to work that day and for the previous crappy days. :)
