Not happy with that news - she was a little too much on the xmas special. Might be a relief when Martha comes back into the show later in the year.

Like the speculation about McGann. Would be very happy to see that. As I said, I was a bit miffed with the Titanic just bashing staight into the Tardis. Time was when nothing could get inside and guns couldn't be fired in the Tardis and yet both happened last Saturday. Guess it's some weirdness, or some fallout from the Paradox machine that allows the ship to enter.

Me good to see Martha in Torchwood series 2 though. Should be good banter between her and Jack, and the other girl (Gwen is it?) might get the arse a little!

Catherine Tate can go kiss my ass.

I'm highly tempted to actually injure her so she doesn't ruin the show. She's ****e, not funny and a HORRIBLE actress.

%&^# &*@! &%#@ **** **** ****!

RTD YOU COMPLETE AND UTTER BASTARD!!!!!

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On the other side of the discussion a multi doctor thing would be really really cool.

Yea, even she admitted that her character (I don't know anything about her personally; her show is on BBCA but I've never seen it; I do know that she is the target of a lot of vitriol) would be hard to take for more than one story. But here we are.

And I don't that Kylie Minogue in the Xmas special constitutes any kind of spoiler, really. And in the US, this isn't very big news as she's not as big of a star here as she is in the UK and Australia. Though she should be!

Did you hear the Torchwood filming crew scared the locala? They film in Cardiff. They set off an explosion as part of a set piece and, not surprising given the recent news stories in the UK, people believed it to be some kind of attack. The Torchwood folks issued a public apology.

I'm pretty sure the ship was sick at that time and probably couldn't adequately protect itself.

^ That was exactly my reaction too. I was all hopeful, then BAM. I didn't like her in The Runaway Bride, even though she got a bit better towards the end, and I can't conceive of a good reason why her character would WANT to go with the Doctor! ARGH!

Tate? See my comments about the Xmas special. This woman can only shout her lines - no acting ability.

Seems that to be a companion in this Dr Who universe you have to be a very poor actress but popular with the unwashed masses.

The fact of that sort of thing never (or rarely) happening is what made it so cool when it happened. It was like the ghost of Douglas Adams came in for a moment and threw a few script notes into their writer's room.

Rigorous adherence to formulaic constraints isn't all that great in my book. I prefer that there be danger and excitement even if it does go a little against the traditional way things are done. The downside of this is that the show frequently goes the other way and resolves the danger by pulling something out of nowhere. Which, yeah, tends to happen in just about every season finale so far.

Durt - I know Billie Piper was already a fairly well established actress on British TV before the show started. And, yeah, she could be pretty hackish. But Freema really doesn't fall into either category, IMHO.

Piper did a competent job on Canterbury Tales. Spirit Trap and The Calcium Kid sucked - hardly a well established actress.

Freema's acting made me cringe just as much. Before Doctor Who all she'd done was Crossroads (revival of a dodgy soap) and shifts at Blockbuster Video.

Luckily Tate's comedy stuff hasn't hit NZ yet but I found her appearance in the Xmas special annoying and loud - the character was probably written that way but she could have least played the part without shouting.

There have been some great actresses involved in Who over the last 3 series; I see there's a campaign to bring back Sally Sparrow.

Nah. I thought it was cool that when Sally Sparrow actually ended up meeting the Doctor she was perfectly okay with just giving him the relevant information he needed so things would turn out right for her and didn't seem to care all that much about the wider events. Having her as a companion would be like bringing back whatshisname (he's also that guy from "Hustle") who was in the fanclub episode. Their stories have been told and while they could be revisited they don't seem to me to belong as companions per se.

I'm kind of good with Tate as the replacement. At least it'll be a welcome change from "I LURVE HIM SO MUCH" to have someone who's shrillishly angry at the Doctor instead.

Couldn't they have chosen someone less annoying to do that though?

I agree about Sally Sparrow though. I thought she was great, and I loved the episode, but I don't want to see her as a companion because it destroys the ending, and what about her other half! They were sweet together.

that would be cool. carey mulligan was a really good actress.

Nice idea. I agree that her acting was very good in that episode.

Just watched series 3 premiere on Sci-Fi. Not a bad epi, but it was weird seeing the sweet Leslie Tiller (Anne Reid) from Hot Fuzz sucking people's blood through a straw, considering last time I saw here blood was shooting from her neck. Surreal indeed.....

While I can completely understand the reactions of others she doesn't really get under my skin. Maybe Rusell T. Davies shares my unusual level of annoyance-resistance and is sitting back in the production offices idly wondering what all the fanboy fuss is about.

Yes - I expect he is RC.

Nice coincidence!! What did you think of the first episode? I liked the Judoon - reminded me a little of the Vogons in the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy - just doing their job and don't really care about detail such as abducting a whole hospital full of earthlings. Hope they come back in some small capacity or other in the future.

I liked it Rogue. Martha wasn't as annoying as some people on another board said she was. Then again, it was her first episode ;) I like the Judoon. Totally indifferent to everything around them except their job. As usual, Tennant was brilliant. Makes it hard to take him seriously in Goblet of Fire anymore. The Shakespeare epi is Friday. Can't wait!

I agree - I thought Martha was good in the role. Tricky to get used to a new companion especially as Rose was so popular.

What did you think of Shakespeare? Like the actor (forget his name now, but he was great in Shameless on Ch 4). Plenty of good funny bits and the lead witch (hopeless with names aren't I?) had a brief scene in Casino Royale as a receptionist when Bond's trying to find the owner of the Aston Martin. Like yourself and Anne Reid in the first episode, it was spooky when I watched the film soon after the episode was aired!

Gridlock next and the Face of Boe!!

I think Rose has been a bit overrated as a companion - perhaps because for a lot of viewers she's the first companion they see the Doctor travel with. But I already like Martha Jones, she already seems like she'll be a much more interesting companion than Rose was.

I found the The Shakespeare Code to be enjoyable viewing - though in the overall scheme of things it felt like a reworking of The Daemons.

I think that the Doctor's adoration for Shakespeare was forced into the story [as the story would have worked just as well without]. If the Doctor was going to single out any human like that I believe Leonardo Da Vinci is a more reasonable choice [unless they go with a fictional character].

The guy playing Shakespeare was funny (not to mention quite dishy), but he just didn't seem like the bard to me. I might not be the best judge considering I'm a Yankee LoL

As for the lead witch, I forget her name, but I remember her as Cassie from Hex. She sure does enjoy playing witches, doesn't she?

P.S. I didn't know until watching my Big Train DVDs the other day that Billie Piper was a pop singer. They did a skit about a member of her fan club. They even played a song of hers in a episode of Spaced. I'm so out of touch here in the states LoL

Oh yeah - I remember Hex. Liked that programme. Missed the second series though which was a shame. Sure it'll be repeated somewhen.

Shakespeare (Dean Lennox Kelly) was a good take on it - very different to what everyone thinks of the Bard, but I like the idea that he was the rocker / film star of the day. Liked the lines when he's thinking of using something the Doctor says in his plays - "wait, that is one of mine!"

Watched Gridlock 2nite. Wasn't a bad epi. Nice to see Ardal again, even as a cat. Couldn't recognize the face, but I know that voice anywhere. Got a lil weepy at the end with Boe. I'm such a dork.

I see the Daleks are back YET AGAIN next week. Are they like galactic cockroaches or something?

I think they have been used way too much in the last 3 series. Now when you get to the episode Blink (number 10 I think??), that has some top baddies that are a pretty simple idea and work really well.

No need to keep bringing the Exterminators back all the time. Dilutes the impact a little.

Anyway, enjoy! 1930's Manhattan looked good I thought. Plus you've got Hugh Quarshie from Phantom Menace and Highlander fame.
