  1. Whooooaaa, this makes a lot of sense. It would explain why they didn't give us any glimpse of ice dragon in next week's teaser.
  2. Maybe someone will reply, or maybe this thread will be my personal reading journal! The vampire may foster quickened heartbeats and levitated hair. But is he worse than the parent who gave to society a neurotic child who became a politician? Oh well, thought Doremus. He had lived with Emma for 34 years, and not oftener than once or twice a year had he wanted to murder her. ~It Cant Happen Here / Sinclair Lewis
  3. I thought it might be nice for us to have a place to write down quotes that speak to us or strike us as particularly well-written as we read our way through 2019. These are my first ones: "My heart was a habitation large enough for many guests but lonely and chill, and without a household fire." ~The Scarlet Letter "The dreary burden of a heart unyielded because unvalued and unsought came to Hester's cottage, demanding why they were so wretched." ~The Scarlet Letter

  5. Isn't much happening policy-wise, thank god, but there's plenty happening in terms of public opinion on the US. I agree with Fozzie; I'd like to see at least some semblance of professionalism from the president and his administration.
  6. Did the gold make it back? Randyl was right there with them when the battle started, wasn't he? So everyone is just going to starve to death instead? I understand what she was trying to do, but the common people aren't going to care if she frees them from Cersei unless she can come up with a way to feed them, too. From a purely voyeuristic standpoint, did anyone else find it really uncomfortable to watch? There have always been horrific deaths on this show, and we certainly watched people burning alive during the battle of the blackwater, but I was pretty much feeling every emotion that
  7. Wow, an episode that I'm actually feeling quite positive about! There were more than a few moments that stuck out: *Littlefinger trying to play Bran, who is so far beyond caring at this point. Bran finally became interesting to me again at this moment. *The Sansa/Arya reunion was actually decent, but it occurs to me that a significant portion of the story is now being carried single-handedly by the child (or former child) actors. They're doing quite well--Maisie Williams in particular--but I can't help feeling a little sense of loss at the absence of the acting greats who were present in sea

  9. God, this administration is such a shit show. Watching it happen from the outside is really surreal. It would be funny if it wasn't, you know, rage inducing.
  10. As I've only seen two in over a year, I'm inclined to think they were just one-offs (my friend actually had one run into her apt when she opened the door last week, so there's that). Luckily Japan has a lot of STRONG cockroach-control options because the entire country is a breeding ground for them because of everything from the climate to how residences are constructed. I bought some of the poison pellets and the death spray, but I've mostly calmed down since my initial post.
  11. I've been in my current apartment just over a year and have seen a total of two cockroaches--one last summer, one last night, both in the entryway, far away from any food sources. Both times I saw them when I got up to use the bathroom in the night. The first time, I went back in my bedroom, closed the door (the entryway can be closed off from the rest of the apartment), and it had disappeared by morning. The one from last night crawled behind a shelf that was too heavy to move, stayed there while I got ready for work, and was on its back pawing the air when I got home just now, still in the e
  12. Yeah it was an entertaining scene, and Olenna's wry dialogue still elicits a laugh. But I still felt nothing for her passing. This is what I'm talking about. Both actors brought their A-game, as usual, and the spirit of their personalities was there, but the quality of the dialogue was lacking. In the earlier seasons, they didn't feel the need to spell everything out as if everyone is an idiot. Olenna could've easily stopped at "I'd never seen the poison work before," Jaime would've figured it out from context, and we all come out of it feeling a bit smarter. She didn't need to continue with
  13. After this episode, I'm more convinced than ever that Jon and Tyrion should rule together. Their rapport, their mutual respect, the candor they have in each other's presence, and the talent for leadership they both have would make them a wonderful pair. Davos can help, too. Dany... she might have good intentions, but the way she has waltzed into Westeros and just expects everyone to bend the knee leaves a foul taste. I wouldn't really expect someone who think she's a queen to behave any differently, but the contrast between her behavior and Jon's just leaves her looking worse. She's acting a l
