  1. Tonight was the season finale for ABC's new V series -- and in looks like things are well set up for the second season (ABC announced one on May 13)

    "Red Sky"

Val's water breaks and her baby with Ryan will soon be born. Meanwhile Erica, tired of being on the defensive, decides to go on the offensive and gets herself and Tyler invited up to the Mothership for a get-to-know-everyone-better dinner. But she has more than food on her mind; she's really there to find Anna's soldiers and destroy them. And Chad, after Father Jack asks him to help get a message on the ship to Joshua, discovers the awful truth that Anna's been using him.

  2. I was annoyed with the change for the Fringe threads because it was obvious this is only being done to make the monthly ratings for this forum look better than they are because new threads count in one rating system where old ones do not. But when a couple forums were deleted a month or 2 back, I realized that without this ratings upswing we might lose this forum so when I remember I try to post in the new Fringe threads. Anything to save this forum.

Actually, I never intended to use the single episode threads to be a ratings boost, we used them back when the Science-Fiction forum was still the Star Trek forum (primarily the Enterprise years) and they did help to organize some of the discussion. I had hoped the episode topics would prove just as useful for in the Science-Fiction forum since we rotate through several series during the year. Although, I'm not sure how well they're working out as we don't have nearly as many people watching single series as we did when Star Trek was still around and nowadays online "broadcasts" on sites like Hulu and DVRs seemed to have further split when folks end up watching new episodes.

It is nice and interesting hearing what people think about the single episode topics, I hae been reconsidering them over the last few weeks and everyone's thoughts will be very beneficial (funnily enough, I was even going to post a similar topic as the current seasons wound down but I'm rather glad to see Boba has beat me to it). As an alternative, if folks would rather we could just have a single regularly updated "announcement" topic for a given show as a reminder for the new episodes and let the discussion fall wherever our members would like.

I've no problem if folks prefer to stick to a single threads for show discussion and ignore the topics for single episodes -- I try to do them for as much as a reminder about new episodes as hopeful discussion generators. On the flip side, I hope that folks don't feel that all discussion about a given show needs to be relegated to a single topic.

Like Six said, I think starting up a new thread for each season, as the come along, would be beneficial for anyone searching through for info in a big thread.

I do like Six's suggestion on rearranging how episodic topics are titled -- I wish I had thought to do that months ago as the latest version of the forum software sort of nullifies the usefulness of the 'subtitle' especially for everyone using high monitor resolutions.

  3. Tonight's episode of Stargate Universe is "Pain" running at the show's regular time slots of 9/8C and 11/10C. There are 3 more episodes left in the seaon, next week's episode and then the two part season finale the following two weeks.

When the crew suffers from vivid hallucinations that tap into their personal fears, Tamara Johansen isolates the affected from the rest and then tries to seek out the cause of the affliction as it spreads and becomes life-threatening.

  4. I'm not really looking forward to this summer. When you post fall, be sure to include the Deathly Hallows. And the next Twilight movie. ;)

Hahaha -- blame Box Office Mojo and IMDB, they really should know better. Except for a couple noted entries, I was going by their lists & sorting.

  5. I figure this would be a handy reference for anyone interested in this summer's science-fiction movies. Just like with the DVD Watch, I'll be using a broad net with what movies to include -- and as always, if anyone thinks I missed something please, please, post about it. (Like with the Watch, I'll also be listing the superhero/comic based movies since they often cross into sci-fi territory)

    MAY 7th

    -- Iron-Man 2

-- Metropolis (Complete Restoration) Check Official Site page for scheduled dates, more added at any time so keep checking back if you don't see a location near you

    JUNE 4

    -- Splice

    JUNE 18

    -- Jonah Hex

    JULY 2

-- The Last Airbender (not Sci-Fi I know, but I figure Shyamalans adaptation of the hit series is on many folk's radar)

    JULY 9

    -- Predators

    JULY 16

    -- Inception

--Valhalla Rising (Box Office Mojo calls it Sci-Fi Action, short summary doesn't sound like it though)

-- The Sorcerer's Apprentice (included on IMDB Summer movie guide under Sci-Fi)

    AUGUST 13

-Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (included in IMDB Summer Movie Guide under Sci-Fi)

-- The Adjustment Bureau (Box Office Mojo calls it Sci-Fi)

That seems to be it, posting this now but I'm going to insert links to each movie's website (where available)

EDIT 1: Links included now. As we get closer toward Fall, I'll update and expand this list in include the Fall & Winter movies (Tron Legacy, woohoo!).

  6. Tonight is the start of the two part season finale for Fringe, with "Over There: Part 1" (9/8C). Looks like things are going to change for the Fringe universe -- and it seems like there'll be plenty of interesting stories for the series' next season.

    OVER THERE: Part 1

In the first part of the two-part season finale, Walter and Olivia travel to the parallel universe, and the anticipated face-off between Walter Bishop and William Bell occurs. Seth Gabel guest stars as the principal investigator in the Alternative Fringe division

  7. Tonight's episode is "The Negotiation" (running regular slot of 8/7C) and Flash Forward is has moved to 1 day before the flash forward date. After tonight's episode are just 2 more, next week's "Countdown" and then "Future Shock".

    Official Page: http://abc.go.com/shows/flash-forward

    Hulu Page: http://www.hulu.com/flash-forward

On the day before the prophesised flashforward date, Mark must continue to protect Gabriel, and Aaron's life is on the line when he locates his daughter's captors.

  8. I'm hopeful that Shout! will be able to release a great quality DVD of the Americanized version (Gammera, The Invincible), it's a fun version in and of itself.

This is one of the scenes filmed for the adaptation, Dr. Contrare is played by none other than Alal Oppenheimer. Oppenheimer was one of the actors who helped make He-Man and the Masters of the Universe so memorable, he was Skeletor -- of course Oppenheimer's credits are vast and he has done all sorts of acting over the years.

  9. After tonight's episode (Fruition), the current season of V only has one more episode. Show starts at 10/9C

    Official Page -- http://abc.go.com/shows/v

    Hulu Page -- http://www.hulu.com/v

Someone close to Anna is the victim of a violent attack; Erica and the team look for a scientist who may have created a weapon that the Visitors fear.

It sounds like the people behind the show are pretty hopeful for another season -- if the resistance gets ahold of a weapon that can challenge the Visitors we could be in for an interesting run of shows in a possible new season.

  10. Sorry about being a bit late with May's edition. We get quite a bit in the first week of May, but releases taper of fast after that although there is a reasonable stream of anime releases this month. A few of this month's stand outs are 3 more classic Doctor Who releases on the 4th; the first week also sees the first 80s release from WB's Saturday Mornings collections -- the center piece of the set is the first episode of Thundarr the Barbarian (appearing on DVD for the first time). WEP also re-releases the Lionforce Voltron series on two sets (MSRP of $40 each, but many places selling sets in mid $20 range).

May 18 sees the next significant releases, MillCreek continues their budget priced releases, this month check out THe Greatest American Hero but the big release has got to be Shout! Factory's high quality release of Gamera: The Giant Monster. Shout! will continue releasing the Showa era Gamera movies in high quality DVDs in the coming months too. Unfortunately the American adaptation of of Gamera (called Gammera the Invincible) is not included with the first release -- Shout! very much wanted to include the american version of the movie but the UCLA film library has the only known 35mm scope elements and they chose to be rather, shall we say, uncooperative when Shout! tried to work with them. This left Shout! with only the option of using 16 mm T.V. prints if they wanted to include Gammera the Invincible and as Shout! had already went to the effort of making a high quality transfer of the Japanese print, they did not want to sully the release by using the same cruddy pan amd scan print that all the bootleg releases have used.

  11. I listed many of the shows premiering/returning over the spring in summer back in March, at least the ones I could track down at the time anyways.

Besides what you've listed, NBC has two seeming sci-fi shows. Day One, which has been cut down from a series to a mini-series and again this January down to a 2 hour tele-movie. See NBC page for some more info *link* -- Day One doesn't have a date yet though.

And NBC also has Persons Unknown -- doesn't seem like it'll be pure sci-fi but may have some sci-fi elements. It'll be airing Mon. June 7 at 10/9C

A surreal mind-game of a series centering on a group of strangers who awaken in a deserted town with no memory of how they arrived, only to realize that there is no escape. Watched by omnipresent security cameras, their every attempt at leaving the town's borders is thwarted by mysterious forces. The only source of information is fed randomly through remotely controlled televisions, and as mistrust begins to breed, every alliance will be tested, especially when new guests begin to arrive. June 7, 2010.

I haven't looked much into what shows will be returning or airing this coming Fall and Winter though, I figured I'd wait a until August or September since the networks schedules are not really settled yet.

  12. Stargate Universe has 4 more episodes this season after tonights "Sabotage" (regular time 9/8C with a repeat at 11/10C) . As you can already see by the title, there is a mystery afoot aboard the Destiny, will the gang of meddling kids figure it out or will culprit (if there's a culprit) get away?

    Hulu page: http://www.hulu.com/stargate-universe

    Official page: http://www.syfy.com/universe/

One of the FTL drives of Destiny explodes, and the crew suspects that someone may have sabotaged it.

  13. Fringe contines its run tonight with "Northwest Passage", regular time of 9/8C. There are 2 episodes left in the season, a two part season finale airing over the next couple of weeks called "Over There". Tonight's episode sounds like a bit of a breather while simultaneously setting up the season finale -- sounds like it'll be interesting watching.

Peter teams up with Sheriff Mathis on a serial murder investigation with ties to Newton. Meanwhile, Walter copes with the possibility of being sent back to St. Claire's, and someone from the "other side" pays a visit. Martha Plimpton and Sebastian Roche guest stars as Sheriff Mathis and Newton, respectively.

  14. Flash Forward is now quickly heading to it's season finale on May 27. Tonight's episode is "Course Correction" running at the regular time of 8/7C -- just 3 more episodes left.

    Hulu Page: http://www.hulu.com/flash-forward

    Official Page: http://abc.go.com/shows/flash-forward

-Demetri and Agent Banks search for a murderer who preys on people who thought they've escaped their flashforward fates. Meanwhile, Mark reluctantly agrees to help Simon find his missing sister.

  15. Toho, the House of Godzilla, has been hard at work on a live action adaptation of Space Battleship Yamato and plan to release the movie in Japan this December. The anime series Space Battleship Yamato was adapted for North America as the series Star Blazers. This past January Toho released a trailer, which I'm sure is of great interest if you're here already.

Currently no American company has announced a distribution deal -- hopefully we'll hear of one soon. Toho's efforts for this movie remind me a lot of their sci-fi movies from the 60s and 70s.

Official Movie Website: http://www.yamato-movie.net/ (currently shows some sort of countdown in the lower left corner [just over 12 hours left] maybe Toho is getting ready to reveal a full trailer)

After tonight's episode "Hearts and Minds" (regular time at 10/9C), the new series of V has two more episodes. The season finale will be on May 18.

    Official Page: http://abc.go.com/shows/v

    Hulu Page: http://www.hulu.com/v

Erica, Ryan, Father Jack and Hobbes learn Anna's sent a shuttle filled with a deadly V tracker team to find them, and must figure out how to stop the shuttle from landing. Meanwhile, Anna gives Tyler his invitation to the Live Aboard Program, and Chad confronts Father Jack on what he knows about The Fifth Column.

Tonight's episode sounds like the sort of story we'd see in a regular series (not that V isn't a regular series) -- perhaps this means V's chances for a second season are pretty good.

  17. Stargate Universe floys on to the series mid-June season finale. Tonight's episode is "Lost" airing at the show's regulary times of 9/8C and 11/10C.

    Official Page: http://www.syfy.com/universe/

    Hulu Page: http://www.hulu.com/stargate-universe

    LOST --

Greer is trapped in some rubble on a planet and left for dead, and the ordeal brings back memories of his abusive father and loving mother. Meanwhile, the crew of the Destiny continues their attempt at gaining access to the ship's flight controls so they can rescue Eli, Chloe, Scott and Greer.[

  18. Another new episode of Fringe tonight (regular time of 9/8C) looks like it'll be something of a fun episode with a bit of plot development.

    Official Page: http://www.fox.com/fringe/

    Hulu Page: http://www.hulu.com/fringe

While Walter deals with some upsetting news, he tells Olivia’s niece, Ella, a fairy tale that includes musical performances by Olivia and Agent Broyles.

The episode title is curious -- a brown betty is sort of cross between a cobbler and a bread pudding, see the WIKI article for more.

  19. There was an official Star Trek cook book a number of years back. There was an interesting (but small) section about how the various non-human dishes were made on the shows, but most of it was themed dishes based on something a character liked, or sometimes recipes that cast members contributed.

I'd probably watch a show that was focused showing how sci-fi food was made for various T.V. shows & movies. Unfortunately ever since Star Trek ceased being a active television regular there really isn't a sci-fi property that shows "non-human" foods.

  20. Not much of a preview summary for tonight's episode of Flash Forward (running regular time of 8/7C). Sounds like more of an episode to fill out some existing plot lines. And just 4 more episodes after tonight, season finale is May 27

    Official Site: http://abc.go.com/shows/flash-forward

    Hulu Page: http://www.hulu.com/flash-forward

Janis continues her role as a mole. Aaron's life is in danger when he travels to Afghanistan to find his daughter.
  21. ...I wonder who at the network decided they needed a cooking show, especially since they're not going to offer anything new for viewers. Scripps currently has Food Network and are soon going to roll Fine Living into the Cooking Channel, daytime news shows run cooking segments often, Rachel Ray has a network show, Bravo runs mutliple cooking shows. I could have sworn we were nearing critcal mass for cooking "shows" but I guess the suits at SyFy thought otherwise.

I'm not sure what's worse, that SyFy is going to have a cooking show or actually called it Quantum Kitchen (as if that would fool anybody). I wonder what sort of "recipes" they'll offer -- FTL French Fries, Ray gun Ranchos Huevos, Proton Popovers?
