  1. I just about fell out of the chair when I read you were going to get a pup, Icy! lol. Good for you about the poor cat. Poor thing. Have you started to test out names on it yet?

p.s. I will be hedgehog-sitting next week. My sister and the fam are going to Chicago for a few days, so she's bringing the hedgehog over. Now I have to break it to Joe. lol. He won't care, except that our house is a complete disaster right now and I'm not sure where we're going to put the tank. Little tiny house + new windows being installed = big mess

  2. Destiny, how does Isis do in crowds? The game sounds like fun to me.

As for dogs and rolling - I think labs definately have an affinity for eating and rolling in all sorts of nasty ickiness. When we go for walks Syd will always find something to roll or munch on. I have to keep a close eye on her and whenever she starts to put her nose to the ground and make a beeline for a little mound of something, it's a sharp "No!" from me and a tug on the leash. lol. Sometimes she'll drop and start rolling before I can catch her though. And dude, that dog LOVES horse manure. I swear she thinks it's about as good as a Milkbone treat. lol.

Java on the other hand will generaly only sniff at something a little and keep going. She'll only roll in it, if it's something that Syd is really excited about.

I've always wondered if the rolling was to cover their scent or if it was just to carry the wonderful, interesting, smells that the pooch found with them all day long so they can remember what fun they had exploring.

  3. Mr. Turtle was in full turtle defense mode when I found him, completely tucked into his shell. I'm not sure how long Java had been harassing it or how long it had been there. It seemed pretty dried out actually. I was afraid it was dead at first, but figured she wouldn't be acting like that if it was. If it was dead Sydney would have tried rolling on it. That dog will roll in the NASTIEST stuff. lol.

I was tempted to keep the turtle for my 6 year old nephew, he's totally into frogs and turtles. I may have if it had been a little one, but this was one of the bigger painted turtles I've seen.

It's probably a good thing it was a one of these...

and not one of these...

Java would have had her paws full with one of those!

You know speaking of Sunday turtle encounters, one day driving home from church there was a HUGE snapper in the middle of the road. It was easily a foot wide and a couple feet long. Joe stopped the car, got out, grabbed it by the tail and carried it to the swamp on the side of the road. I was pretty impressed - he came back with all his fingers! lol.

  4. I know, poor turtle!!! I wonder if he parachuted into the yard or something. I put him in a box and had it in the passenger seat while I drove to the stream and it didn't take him long after the car started moving for him to come out of his shell. He almost made it out of the box a couple times too. I've never see a turtle move so fast though, when I set him by the water. It was cute. Then when I dropped him off at the stream, there was a man at a nearby house who yelled at his kid to "see what that ladie's dumping!". Turns out that they've had people drop off cats there too. :( I reassured him that it was just a painted turtle and he said that it was a good place for it.

  5. Aw, poor Luca!

Sunday, when I got home from church, Java kept barking, but it was a really funny kind of bark. Different from her usual "I'm barking because I saw another dog" bark, or her "I'm barking because I want attention" bark, or the "I'm barking because they're kids running by and I want to play" bark. So I went out to check on her and she was in the corner of the yard jumping in and out of some overhanging bushes and kind of bark/whining at something. When I got over there and stuck my head under the bush, I realized she was snapping and pawing at a poor painted turtle that had somehow gotten into the yard. She was so funny, she didn't know what to do with it and each time she snapped at it, she actually just snapped at the air, it was like she was afraid to put her mouth on it. Meanwhile, Syd is sitting there, just enjoying the show Java's putting on. She completely ignored the turtle. I had to pull Java out from under the bush by her tail, crawl under it, and grabbed the poor turtle. I ended up dropping it off at a nearby stream.

  6. If it's any consolations my dogs dig like your chew. lol. I swear Java is trying to excavate a hole to China or something. She digs nearly straight down and DEEP! I've never actually caught her digging in the hole, it happens while I'm at work, but my neighber said she walked by one day and saw Syd but didn't see Java anywhere. She looked around and then all she saw was a tip of a black tail sticking out of a hole along the fence. I can't believe how quickly she digs those holes, I fill them up, she digs another one in another spot and we repeat the process.

  7. I'm glad my dogs were well past the chewing stage when I got them.

I did live with my BFF for a few months while her husband was at boot camp and she had a young Keeshond mix Holly that chewed on ANYTHING you left out. I lost more than one pair of shoes and other unmentionables (lol) when I forgot to shut my bedroom door before going to work. I am now a huge fan of crate training. ;)

  8. I had a problem for a little while with Java being possesive/aggresive about her food and her dog house. There were a couple times when I had to run outside to break up a snarling dog fight. Well, technically it was just Java snarling and snapping and Sydney was always trying to get away. It always happened at night too. After crating Java in the garage overnight a couple times it hasn't happened since. I think she needed reminding that she wasn't top dog, I am. ;)

There have been times when I've come home from work and Java hasn't finished all her food, but it's still in the dish. Then because I'm out there with the dogs, Syd will think she can try to eat it. She's the easy one though. I just have to give her a stern "Sydney, no" and she'll look at me with those big sad brown eyes and go plop down next to the water dish. She's such a sweetheart. I need to take more doggy pictures.

  9. I feed the dogs twice a day, but I keep their food bin seperate. Syd normally devours her food in about 30 seconds, but within the last few months Java doesn't always eat hers immediately when I feed them. She'd rather play and then she'll eat it after a little while. In the mornings though before work, I don't have time to wait to watch Java finish her food, so Sydney could be getting into it. Honestly though, I didn't think it was a problem. Java has snapped at Syd a few times in the past (protecting her dog dish) and normally Syd just walks right by it. She must be getting sneaky about it.

They haven't been exercised the last few months like they should though. For a while I had no energy left after getting home from work. I was pretty much a slug. Being preggo does weird things to your body. :p I'm starting to not feel so tired all the time though, so we're getting back to regular walks. As long as it's not 90 degrees out like last week.

  10. I took my pooches to the vet last night for routine vaccinations and poor Syd has gained 15 POUNDS since last year!!! The thing is she looks a little heavy, but she doesn't look "fat". She weighed 88 pounds. Now she has to go on a doggie diet. She won't like that. I'm not feeding her a ton of food either, she doesn't get table scraps or people food, so I'm just scratching my head trying to figure out how she gained that much. The only thing I can think of is she's finishing Java's food when I'm not around. The little piggy. Java came in at a healthy 59 pounds.

  11. Joe and I were on the highway the other day when a big diesel truck with a lift kit blew by us. There was an ATV and a dirt bike in the back and just by the way the guy was driving I was thinking to myself, "That's the sort of truck that I'd expect to see with truck nuts". That's when I saw them hanging off of the trailer hitch. I think they're absolutely ridiculous too.

  12. Besides, the next dog will be Joe's and it wil be a beagle.

Get a shelter dog, they are the best! :D

I SO would! The beagle is going to come from the same breeder that Joe's dad and brother's dogs came from. They're all rabbit dogs, so breeding actually does start to be important then, since they'll be used for a specific job. The only reason I wouldn't get a shelter dog, is if I really follow through with wanting to train a duck dog. Then I'll definately start looking for a lab from some good bloodlines with a hunting history again.

OR, if I could get Joe on board, I'd love to become a Paws with a Cause volunteer trainer. Of course, I'm sure I would need more training first. lol.

  13. Oh yeah, I know puppies like to chew. They just need to listen to me the first time I say no! :)

Yes, we keep them crated at night, which thankfully hasn't caused too much whining yet. I hate leaving them crated up when we're not home, but it's probably better for them that way.

We need to take them to puppy training, especially Mara. She is sooo hyper and such an attention whore. Whenever I try to give Murray his medicine she jumps all over him and me. If I try to pet Murray she comes over and licks me. If she's finished with her food, she'll go and eat Murray's. She's a pain, but oh I love her little face!

How are you doggies, Hanfan? Dragged you in the mud lately? :)

Yep, time for some OB lessons. :) I so want a puppy to train. But at the same time I don't, that means one of my pooches is no longer here. :( Besides, the next dog will be Joe's and it wil be a beagle.

THe pooches are good, but neglected right now. :( I've been gone so much I haven't had much time to do more than take them on short walks and play with them a few minutes each night. I honestly hate having them outside. :(

Day One: Christmas tree enters household. Minnie doesn't even seem to notice.

Day Two: Has still taken no notice of actual tree, but has detected curious smell permeating the air. Investigates by sniffing everywhere that the tree isn't.

Day Three: Finally notices tree. Becomes deathly afraid. Avoids at all costs.

Day Four: Finds tree's menacing presence to be persisting. Resolves to try to eat as much of tree as possible.

    That's so funny!

Cita's siamese reminded me of Sydney. When she's inside she'll often sleep in the bathtub. I would wake up in the morning and there would be big pawprints all over the tub. And the last house I lived at Java would let herself out. There was a sliding glass door in the kitchen/dining area that led to the backyard (which was fenced). Java would stand up with her front paws leaning on the glass, shift her weight to the side, and push the door open. If I forgot to lock the door in the winter, I'd often wonder why it suddenly seemed so cold. Or in the summer why there were suddenly bugs all over the house. lol. I never could teach her to close it behind herself. Or let herself back in.

  14. Oh yeah. We forgot to warn you about the chewing. My friend had a young dog when I roomed with her for a while and I lost a few articles of clothing and shoes to her, before I learned to keep my bedroom door closed when I left for work. lol.

Do you crate the pups at night, Mara?

  15. What is up with the buttscratching thing? Is it because it's the one spot they can't reach? Like humans trying to lick their elbow? Because our dog will get her front half on the ground and stick her butt straight in the air for you. No wonder she gets humped at every dog park we go to. Hussy.

I KNOW! Syd does the same thing. Except for getting humped. ;) And then when you start scratching her butt she starts wiggling all over the place, stomping her back legs, tries to back up into you, and sticks her nose in the air, huffs and huffs, bares her teeth, and her eyes roll back in a look of ecstacy.

The first time Icy saw her do that, she was a little unnerved. ;)

  16. AW!!!!

I was tongue attacked by my dogs last night. We were back in the yard after a walk and when I knelt to unclip their leashes, my lab knocked me over in the snow. Then both Sydney and Java pounced on me and started licking my face. It's so gross, but I couldn't stop laughing. Or get up. I was all bundled up, flailing in the snow, and laughing uncontrollably with two waggy-tailed dogs on top of me. Then my neighbors pulled up and asked if they were interupting anything.

  17. I haven't had any time for fun reading lately. :( I am jumping all around between chapter in the Dave Ramsey book Financial Peace Revisited. Joe and I are taking a Dave Ramsey workshop and they're sending us home with homework - see above. :p Actually, so far it's been pretty interesting, if somewhat basic, information.

  18. One Thousand White Women: The Journals of May Dodd by some guy (I'll double check the author later.

A coworker was telling me about it the other day, and I thought it sounded interesting, so she brought it in Monday. I started reading it during lunch yesterday and I'm no halfway through it. It's a historical fiction about a proposal that the Cheyenne Indians made to President Grant in the 1870's. They would trade 1000 Indian ponies for 1000 white women. Apparantly that really happened, but of course the government was shocked and appalled by the entire idea and refused. The book is written as a what if, the government had actually gone along with the idea. And pulled women from prison, lunatic asylums, and volunteers. It's definately a good read.
