I don’t think it’s a question of being able to follow, they’re covering that fine. Like Choc said, it’s why should we care?

Because the characters care, and they seem authentic about it (ie, it doesn't seem contrived)?

I mean maybe I'm just a cheap date, because the first marvel movie I saw was Endgame, and I enjoyed that too. But it seems to me that you don't always have to see behind the curtain to understand what the characters are doing, or why, or to empathize with what they're trying to accomplish.

Point is - I'm sure the story is more interesting to people who have seen it all, and who know the history. But the story is still accessible to the people who are new to these characters, and I think that's what matters.

  2. I haven’t watched any of the cartoons, ever, and I have no problem following it or understanding that there’s some gravity to certain things happening.

The flashback to the clone wars in tonight’s episode was compelling, even having never watched any of that stuff.

There are some things that are obviously callbacks that I know I’m missing. But I just think about those as if they are obi wan throwing out clone wars references in ANH. I don’t have to know everything. And it seems crazy for the creative team to be building this huge body of Star Wars material and then be expected to somehow try to keep it all insulated from each other.

  3. I haven’t watched any of the cartoons, and I’m sure I’m missing some context here and there, but it doesn’t seem to be an issue. I’m enjoying it.

In a way it’s like the references to the clone wars in A New Hope. There’s a backstory being referenced. But you don’t have to know it to follow the story in the show.

  4. Really cool clip after the credits - thanks for mentioning it or I wouldn’t have caught it.

I really enjoyed this season and can’t say enough good things about it. This has been my favorite of the streaming shows so far, and the first since Mando to feel rewatchable (I’ve already rewatched a couple of the episodes as the season has progressed).

I feel like the show has done an amazing job with character building, and creating tension and drama where appropriate. Loving the lack of constant in my face Easter eggs. Loving the brand new world building. Loved the aliens in last weeks episode (can only assume they’ll be shoved in my face as an Easter egg in a Filoni series yet to be filmed).

So many positive things to say. I hope they keep it up in the second season, and I hope that this show helps influence some of the other live action shows.

  5. I’m still really enjoying this show and where it’s going. The prison story line is successfully making me hate the empire, and will also presumably help radicalize Andor to the cause.

Also, the show is doing a good job of making me care about Mon Mothma.

  6. Definitely my favorite Star Wars streaming series so far. I always come here after watching something Star Wars related, to see what you all are saying. This is the first time in a while I’ve felt compelled to post.

To Tank’s point, I really enjoyed the lack of endless winks and nods. Those always make the Star Wars galaxy feel so much smaller than it should be.

Just as an aside, the droid’s voice reminded me of TARS and CASE from Interstellar.

  7. Things said by members of congress during the Clinton impeachment cut both ways. Bringing those soundbites up is wonderful for pointing fingers and for each side to claim they are more consistent than the other, but it has absolutely zero to do with whether President Trump did what he's accused of, and whether he should be removed from office as a result.

  8. LOL. You're all so jaded.

Anyway. It's pretty clear to me that Trump withheld security aid, counter to our national security interests, for the purpose of pressuring Ukraine for political dirt.

You might not think that's enough to build the political will for impeachment and removal from office, but I would argue that it should be.

  9. I enjoyed Solo a lot once I got around to watching it. I felt a lot of Star Wars fatigue after TLJ.... that was TLJ's fault, not Solo's. So, I hope Solo's underperformance doesn't kill too many things I would have otherwise enjoyed, but I was totally neutral on this GOT-guys trilogy, and the Kenobi thing does seem better off as a series.

  10. I hear ya, bro. But I stand by my point. Especially with slavery, which was specifically protected by our constitution at its signing - its hard(er) to pin that evil of our nations history on a single president or group of presidents. Youre talking about people presiding over a system designed with institutionalized standards of oppression. Meanwhile, Trump is accused of taking a system with institutionalized standards for fairness and steering the power of the government towards his *personal* benefit, in violation of those standards.

Again, its way too early to say with any fairness whether Trump will be looked at as the worst by history. But a president that uses his power and the apparatus of the federal government for personal gain is exactly what our framers feared. And its impossible to diffuse the blame to anybody else.

It still feels like we are talking about separate issues. Slavery is clearly a worse evil than anything Trump is alleged of doing, but that seems like a separate question to me, especially in a thread about impeachment.

  11. Recency bias is always a problem - who knows at this point? But I'm not sure there's a more shallow defense than the "at least he doesn't promote slavery" defense.

Our founding fathers created the impeachment power because they were concerned that somebody vested with the executive power might use that power for their personal benefit, in violation of the public trust. If the allegations against Trump are true, then I can absolutely see how history would hold him out as an example of what the impeachment power was created to protect against. That in and of itself would place him among the worst presidents ever.

Our prior presidents and forefathers who protected, enshrined, and even expanded slavery should absolutely be held to account by history - but, in my opinion, that's a much broader criticism about our nation and founding system of government in general. It's kind of apples and oranges isn't it? None of those slavery-promoting presidents could have possibly been impeached for that conduct. It seems like a different discussion to me.

  12. If you don't start an impeachment inquiry for what was alleged in this instance, then when would you EVER begin an impeachment inquiry? Especially when the administration's own appointees have deemed the allegations credible?

I mean, come on. If the House didn't start an inquiry into this, it would be like the House neutering itself. Chalking it up to mere politics is easy, especially in our hyper-partisan era, but if the House was going to impeach for shallow political reasons then they wouldn't have waited this long.

  13. I'm resurrecting this thread from its long slumber because after the Terminator: Dark Fate trailer dropped, I looked and saw that Josh Friedman (the TSCC showrunner) helped with the story for Dark Fate. That totally surprised me. Further googling then lead me to this interview from last year, which is a great read for any lingering TSCC fans:

  14. If its actually canon now that Palpy is responsible for Anakins birth then maybe it will turn out that he somehow manipulated the force from beyond the grave to create Rey too, and hes intending to play on her insecurities for his own purposes.

  15. The question is which Skywalker is the title in reference to? There's a lot of candidates in the context of "nobody is ever really gone," especially when you throw in a still-uncertain Rey lineage. It seems like Ben or Rey are the most likely though.

  16. Upping the number of representatives has been something that's been talked about for quite awhile. It would really only make a difference in the Electoral College in the case of really close totals though.

The proposals Ive seen would have made a difference in 2016 and thats all anybody who is taking about it cares about right now.
  17. I've seen arguments recently that the number of representatives in the House of Representatives should be increased to make the chamber more, uhh... representative. It's been capped at 435 since 1911, but our population has grown a good bit since then. The bonus effect (on top of better representation) would be that the Electoral College would much more likely track the popular vote.

  18. Whatever Warren did or didn't claim in the past, she apparently recognized this issue as enough of a liability to warrant taking the gambit to try to nip it in the bud before the 2020 race starts (which, btw, basically starts next month as soon as the midterms are over).

She has to have known it could backfire, but she must have decided that it was better for it to be aired now before the race got underway. It seems like an unforced error in a lot of ways at the moment, but it will be interesting to see its continued effect, if any, once we move into the 2020 cycle.

  19. The Kennedy conspiracy theories are a little too much.

I really don't find it unusual at all that Kennedy's son's business life may have intersected with Trump's - whether you agree that it's a good thing or not, it's really just not uncommon at all for the political/financially elite to have interacted with each other.
