The Argument For Older, Low Budget Science Fiction

Posted by RangerGal , 17 August 2009 - - - - - - · 864 views
Science Fiction
I've just finished up a long search and a viewing of Ursula Le Guin's "Lathe of Heaven", one of my favorite Science Fiction films of all-time.

Not that it's quite on the level of 2001, but it' s damn good.
Really great science fiction should combine a little post-apocalyptic stuff, some m...

Television Series
I'm beginning to mourn the demise of a series that started out intriguing me only because of the filming locations: Hempstead House at Sands Point, where I spent many hot summers dressing medieval, doing summer faire, and camping in the woods nearby.

Merlin: The Arturian Saga - Dumbed Down for TV?

Television Series
When I saw the series advertised as "new" last year on Alluc.org I wasn't excited. It reminded me right away of past BBC efforts to revive Robin Hood . 'Course the first series was the best, and subsequent efforts to revive the series with other actors failed miserably. I wasn't thrilled at the idea of another Merlin .

Knowing: Another "Natural" Science Fiction With Biblical Themes

Posted by RangerGal , 22 March 2009 - - - - - - · 862 views
I'm officially cranky now.

What with the end of BattleStar Galactica , the new series Kings , (which is apparently a biblical retelling) and this new movie, Knowing doing more biblical prophesy, I'm SICK TO DEATH of biblical science fiction!

Is this a response to the economic climate? Are disaster movies making a come-back? Are...

RIP Natasha Richardson; Liam and The Irish Community

Posted by RangerGal , 22 March 2009 - - - - - - · 729 views
When I hear about Natasha Richardson's injury I was worried for her and her family. I knew that head trauma is a tricky thing; on needs to get to an emergency room as soon as possible. Since she hadn't, the chances of her surviving were staggeringly minimal.

One thing I must stress: anyone who has been knocked out (unconscious for any period of time), n...

HAIR: Rado, Ragni and MacDermot

Posted by RangerGal , 14 March 2009 - - - - - - · 694 views
This hurt my brain this afternoon. It's a version of "Good Morning Starshine" from the musical, "HAIR". I recognised "Bob" fro Sesame Street immediately...and I remembered seeing this clip when it was originally aired on PBS.

The Perfect Distraction

Posted by RangerGal , 08 March 2009 - - - - - - · 627 views
I am happy to announce that I have found the perfect distraction in these troubled times:

a movie called Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day .

Starring none other than the Cohen Bros. famous Frances McDormand and the alarmingly charming Ciaran Hinds, this...

The Oscars, Talent and The Lack of Films

Posted by RangerGal , 23 February 2009 - - - - - - · 530 views
I didn't watch the Awards on TV. I did the geeky thing, and watched it on the Net with thirty or more other avid acting fans from as far as Barcelona to the fairly unknown state of Delaware (USA) and England.

We all found a link on the Oscar.com discussion boards and followed it.

The one thing that we all wanted to know was, "Why didn't...

Kin-Dza-Dza: Russian SciFi Movies Are Untapped Gold!

Posted by RangerGal , 18 February 2009 - - - - - - · 615 views

It occurred to me that I've exhausted the available American science fiction movie genre. No, I haven't seen everything; (witness my recent blog on eXistenZ )but I am having a hard time finding really good American scifi. I've rolled to the Brits; settled over Canada for a...

eXistenZ : Am I A David Cronenberg Fan?

Posted by RangerGal , 15 February 2009 - - - - - - · 646 views
Ever since The Dead Zone , I crave movies that give me that sense of angst : that little bit of discomfort that hangs with you long after the movie is over. Not that I want to feel schizophrenic as I did after viewing Kalifornia , but I love the little disjointedly-thought-provoking-mumble that goes on in my brain afterward.

It's not Stephen...
