In a noble quest to determine the best movies of all time, we will have a tournament through a series of voting threads based on your nominations. This should be a lot of fun discussing old movies we've seen and possibly discover some gems we haven't!

1970's Tournament
70's Best Movies Ever - Nominations Each member will submit a list of up to 8 favorite movies released during the 1970's.

70's BME Semis Members will choose 5 movies from the list of Nominations.

70's BME Finals! A poll of 8 movies will be created from the top vote-getters of the semis.

70's BME: <Title> The 1970's winning movie will receive the Nightly Rotten Egg's treatment, in which members will write a mini review, grade, discuss and debate the winner.

I'm thinking of splitting the 80's into two parts... 80-84 and 85 - 89. Then maybe have those two winners battle it out in a thunderdome cage match.

Ughh, top five is ridiculous! The 70's stands as the decade of the 'Director.' An onslaught of revolutionary offerings. I tried to simplify by listing best of genre...

The Godfather Part II
Jaws
Alien
Annie Hall
Animal House

Totally agree. Any other decade would be a snap, but this is just torture, I tells ya! I feel like at least 20 other equal or more-deserving pictures have been left off my list:
  • American Graffiti
  • Chinatown
  • Life of Brian
  • Sleeper
  • Star Trek: The Motion Picture

I won't have that problem. Not that there aren't a lot of good movies in the '80s, '90s, and currently, but my list is pretty solid -- I know what I love, and won't feel like I'm leaving out 20 great movies every time I make a list!

more power to you. decades suck, for me. it usually comes down to narrowing it down to one movie per director, which is hard, then the final vote.

Disagreed. You're reacting from a nostalgic point of view (ie: when you grew up).

As I stated earlier, the 70's are the decade of the auteur/director. Never again was a director/artist given the free reign to make their own film, sans studio intervention, than in the 70's. The 80's and 90's (as a whole) produced a lot of rehashed crap, completely derivative from the 70's!
